Bitter enemies T’Challa and Namor team up to battle Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers in John Ridley’s Black Panther. An issue that could lead to Captain America: Cold War.

T’Challa and Namor have been friends, rivals, and teammates. After the Sub-Mariner flooded Wakanda during Avengers vs X-Men and Wakanda destroyed Atlantis in New Avengers by Jonathan Hickman, they became enemies.

However, during Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars (2015), they put their differences aside to save the multiverse. That said, they haven’t gotten over their disdain for one another but they might become allies once again. As reported by CBR.com, they’ll put their rivalry on hold aside to battle the Avengers.

During John Ridley’s Black Panther, T’Challa has lost everyone important to him. He no longer has the faith of Wakanda, the Avengers, or Storm. The only person who still trusts him is Shuri. Seeing how things have been going, that may be short lived as well. Apparently, the former King of Wakanda’s losing streak will continue. In the upcoming issue, T’Challa will reportedly lose a battle to Captain America and, “just when all seems lost, an unexpected ally arrives at the fray to stand at T’Challa’s side! ENTER NAMOR!”

While there could be a team-up, the solicitation for Black Panther No. 14 reads:

"“…when Namor arrives on the scene, Black Panther is determined to make him pay for the pain he’s inflicted on Wakanda in the past. But the terrorists of his making still loom large, and Namor never goes anywhere without a plan – and an angle…”"

Could this all be tied into a Marvel Comics crossover involving Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, and Wakanda?

There’s an upcoming Marvel Comics event called Captain America: Cold War. A crossover where Sam Wilson will be going up against Wakanda. Namor and Black Panther joining forces could be due to Captain America: Cold War. The loss to Steve Rogers (a fight T’Challa normally wins) could have been Black Panther trying to stop his friend from making a mistake. If that’s the case, it doesn’t look like it worked.

Don’t be shocked if Rogers ends up joining his former teammates to stop whatever is going on. If you read comics regularly, then you know that altercations with heroes usually conclude with team-ups. It’s doubtful this will be any different. What readers and Black Panther fans should be concerned with is what’s next for T’Challa.

Even someone as strong as him has a breaking point. If T’Challa keeps getting defeated, we could see a different kind of Black Panther. Someone with nothing to lose. If that happens, he’ll be more dangerous than anything we’ve seen. Readers have witnessed T’Challa do the impossible while holding back. Imagine if he stops. Will this be a heel turn for T’Challa? Not likely. However, this could make him become someone with less restraint than ever. If that happens, he could become unstoppable.

Black Panther No. 13 is scheduled to be released in January and issue No 14 in February. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow for more on the potential Namor and Black Panther team-up.
