DC: 9 things Warner Bros. Discovery’s new DCU needs to prioritize
By Mark Lynch
Here are 9 things that DC Comics and Warner Bros need to make priorities going forward.
DC Comics/Warner Bros Discovery hasn’t exactly been reliable lately. Fans hoped that with James Gunn and Peter Safran in charge of the newly-formed DC Studios that things would be different. While they might be, adjustments on this big of a scale take time. That also means that there will be changes fans may not like. Among them is the recent news that Henry Cavill won’t be Superman in the DCEU.
Gunn said that Superman is a “huge” priority. An odd statement only to say Cavill wasn’t part of your plan a few days later. With him not being the Superman he cast, Gunn may have someone else in mind. Nevertheless, it’s still disappointing.
With this news, fans of DC Comics have to wonder what’s next. This writer and many others have mentioned the multiple canceled DC movies and shows. Just when you think everything is fine, something new pops up. With all the unfortunate news, it makes you wonder where DC Comics/Warner Bros Discovery should put their priorities. These nine points, characters, projects, and more should be their biggest concerns (ranked from least to greatest), especially if they want to become a dominant force in TV and in film.
9. Great casting
The casting of characters has never been a problem for DC Comics movies. Margot Robbie, Gal Gadot, and Viola Davis are perfect examples of flawless casting. Even the DCEU’s bad movies had great actors. Take Suicide Squad for example. Will Smith was fantastic as Deadshot as was Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. Sometimes even the best performers can’t save a project but that doesn’t mean they don’t give great performances. However, continuing the trend of picking great actors and actresses needs to continue.
There’s a rumor that suggests DC Studios will have Jason Momoa stop playing Aquaman and play Lobo instead. Considering Momoa’s personality and how he portrayed the King of Atlantis, this makes more sense as he would be a great Lobo. If true, this is an example of Warner Bros and James Gunn making a good move with casting. Hopefully this trend will continue. Since there are literally hundreds of performers looking for work, there’s no reason for DC Studios to stop making good choices when it comes to portraying their characters.
Speaking of important casting, Marvel has also been aware of the importance of representation in Phase Four, with an example being the fact that they cast a deaf, indigenous actress to play a deaf and indigenous character. It goes without saying that Warner Bros. Discovery and DC should do the same.
