Is Agatha: Coven of Chaos coming in 2023?

Agatha: Coven of Chaos will bring back Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness but will she be returning this year or next?

“It was Agatha All Along”. Those were the words of the Emmy-winning song that was stuck in our heads after WandaVision‘s biggest twist, and they revolved around a character who quickly became an unexpected fan-favorite.

Kathryn Hahn’s portrayal of Agnes, a.k.a. Agatha Harkness, in Marvel Studios’ first Disney Plus show was so beloved, in fact, that she will now headline her own show. Agatha: Coven of Chaos (formerly titled Agatha: House of Harkness) is set to be a dark comedy series all about the powerful witch, and it features an incredible cast, with Emma Caulfield Ford, Joe Locke, Aubrey Plaza, Patti LuPone, and Debra Jo Rupp all set to appear.

But when can we expect the show to premiere on Disney Plus? Here’s what we know so far.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos release date updates

Agatha: Coven of Chaos was originally planned to release in either winter 2023 or early 2024. Marvel Studios made the announcement at San Diego Comic-Con when studio president Kevin Feige unveiled the upcoming slate of Phase Five programming. As far as which of the options are more likely, it’s looking like the latter right now.

Production began right before the holidays in December 2022 and continued on until May 2023. Taking that into account, and the fact that it’s going to feature nine episodes, an early 2024 release window seems more likely. But production timing isn’t the only possible reason for this.

Marvel Studios has redesigned their release strategy since the beginning of 2023, adopting a less-is-more approach. Fans began to suspect as much when a blog post from Disney Plus Japan (H/T: The Direct) indicated that there will only be three Marvel shows released in 2023 (Secret Invasion, Loki season 2, and Ironheart). However, now it’s looking likely that Ironheart will be bumped to next year, with Echo replacing it (which now has a confirmed November 2023 release date).

Taking all of that into account, it’s looking like Agatha: Coven of Chaos will be a 2024 release. But with so much change going on at Marvel Studios in terms of releases, don’t be surprised if it isn’t the early 2024 window that was once suggested.

As always, it’s best to wait for official confirmation from Marvel Studios, but don’t be getting too ready to see Coven of Chaos come out this year.
