Spider-Man is gone, Peter Palmer is Marvel’s chosen one
By Mark Lynch
Spider-Man is gone from Marvel Comics. Peter Palmer/Spiderman is now the chosen one of the Spider-Verse.
One of the premier characters for Marvel Comics has always been Spider-Man. Since 1962’s Amazing Fantasy No. 15, Marvel’s Wall-Crawler has dazzled fans, beat down villains, and lived by “With great comes great responsibility.”
In the recent Spider-Man series, Dan Slott has the remaining Spider-Beings going up against Shathra. A villain from Amazing Spider-Man: The Life & Death of Spiders, she met her fate when she was eaten and killed by the spiders she normally consumed. But, if you’re a fan of comics, you know death isn’t always the end.
In Dan Slott’s Spider-Verse crossover, Peter Parker of Earth-616 is the chosen Spider-Being; the one that’s always supposed to lead the charge and win the big battles. In Spider-Man No. 3, however, Peter was removed from existence after being stabbed by the Totem Dagger. Without Peter and her back-up Norman Osborn of Earth-44245 (who sacrifices himself to die a hero), Julia Carpenter had to pick a new “chosen one.” She decides on Peter Palmer a.k.a. Spiderman (no hyphen) from Earth-616 Beta. His first question? He wanted to know if he was getting paid for his services.
Spider-Man: Peter Palmer is technically canon
In Amazing Spider-Man No. 1, Peter needed money (nothing has changed in over 60 years). While changing clothes and deciding that joining the Fantastic Four is the way to go, the narration calls him Peter Palmer. This was a typo that was never fixed. What was once a mistake could be the thing that saves the Spider-Verse, or at the very least keep it safe until the real chosen one shows up.
Peter Parker wasn’t erased from history. Readers will see him at the end of the issue. It’s just that he was never bitten by the mystical spider now. It looks like the Totem Dagger doesn’t erase people from existence. It changes their past.
As it was mentioned earlier, Norman Osborn took himself off the board to protect the last shred of the Web of Destiny. Norman sent it to Oscorp Plaza of Earth-616. That’s where it was intercepted by a Peter Parker without powers. Could this be how the chosen Spider-Man comes back? Hopefully it will happen soon or else Morlun will consume him for being annoying.
