The Walking Dead: Dead City takes the TWD Universe to New York this year. Here’s everything you need to know about Maggie and Negan’s next adventure.

The Walking Dead‘s days as a TV series may be over but the story of the TWD Universe is just beginning. The main show ran for eleven seasons before its conclusion on AMC in November 2022, but that was only the end of one chapter in this world.

Three new spinoffs will join Fear The Walking Dead in expanding the world of The Walking Dead this year. The first of those, The Walking Dead: Dead City (originally titled Isle of the Dead), will feature TWD veterans Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as they reprise their roles as Maggie Rhee and Negan. With the show’s arrival on the horizon, here is everything you need to know about it.

Below, you’ll find all the up-to-date information you need about The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1, its premiere on AMC and AMC+, its cast, any trailers and more.

The Walking Dead: Dead City release date

The Walking Dead: Dead City premieres on AMC on Sunday, June 18 2023, airing at 9:00 p.m. ET, immediately before the midseason finale of Fear The Walking Dead (which airs at 10:00 p.m. ET). It will hold the 9 p.m. ET time slot for its five-week run.

The series was originally planned for release in April (this was announced at New York Comic-Con, along with the first look images from the series) but a more recent update from the cable network has confirmed it will be airing in June instead. It was then at WonderCon in March that the June release date was confirmed.

A 2023 release was always a certainty given that it was the first of the new spinoffs to film, but it was reconfirmed in a teaser for what’s coming from the TWD Universe that aired after the series finale of The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead: Dead City trailer

The first look trailer for The Walking Dead: Dead City was released the week that the series finale of The Walking Dead aired. Not only did it confirm that the show would be arriving this year, it gave us our first look at Maggie and Negan’s uneasy reunion in New York City and teased some of the dangers of their misadventures.

It’s a short one, that’s for sure, but this teaser trailer did a great job of setting the stage for the new era of the TWD Universe, showing us some of the different sights (and perhaps new Walkers?) we can expect to see in Dead City.

A second trailer was released just a few months later, previewing how Maggie and Negan find their way back into each other’s lives, and how saving her son might finally be his chance to redeem himself for his heinous actions years before.

The Walking Dead: Dead City cast

The primary cast of The Walking Dead: Dead City naturally consists of Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, as Maggie and Negan will be the main characters of the spinoff. But they aren’t the only members of the cast. Here is the every cast member and character confirmed for the show:

  • Lauren Cohan – Maggie Rhee
  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan – Negan Smith
  • Gaius Charles – Perlie Armstrong
  • Željko Ivanek – The Croat
  • Jonathan Higginbotham – Tommaso
  • Mahina Napoleon – Ginny
  • Trey Santiago-Hudson – Jano
  • Charlie Solis – The Bartender

In addition to these names, a number of actors have been cast in undisclosed roles. They are David Chen, Alex Borlo, Michael Anthony, Randy Gonzalez, John Wu, Alex Huynh, Karina Ortiz, Mahina Napoleon, Caleb Reese Paul, Eleanor Reissa, and Aixa Kendrick.

The Walking Dead: Dead City synopsis

The Walking Dead: Dead City will take place after the events of the series finale of The Walking Dead, and yes that means after the one-year time jump in the episode’s closing moments. We know that Negan is no longer living in any of the survivors’ established communities, while Maggie is still there, seemingly splitting her time between Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Commonwealth. Somehow, the two will cross paths again in Manhattan.

The official synopsis was recently released by AMC and it seems to confirm that there will be another time-jump. You can read it below:

"Years have passed since we last saw Maggie and Negan and they must now form a tenuous alliance in order to accomplish a dangerous mission. Maggie and Negan journey to the island of Manhattan, which, having been isolated since the beginning of the walker apocalypse, has developed its own unique threats. While in the city, Maggie and Negan encounter native New Yorkers, evade a marshal with a troubled past, and hunt down a notorious killer. But as the pair moves deeper into the gritty depths of the walker-infested city, it becomes apparent that the traumas of their tumultuous past may prove just as great a threat as the dangers of the present."
