X-Men: Mr. Sinister rules and ruins the world in Sins of Sinister
By Mark Lynch
The X-Men crossover Sins of Sinister starts with Mr. Sinister taking over the world and ends with his downfall.
You have to appreciate a villain that knows how to be patient or take a loss. Doctor Doom, Red Skull, and Wilson Fisk are among the antagonists in Marvel Comics that know how to bide their time and learn from a loss.
Mr. Sinister is a name that’s often left off that list, mostly because he’s never been in a movie. Or maybe it’s because he doesn’t branch outside of the mutant world often. If you’re a fan of the X-Men comic books, you know how incredible he’s been over the years. However, what he did in Sins of Sinister is better than anything he’s previously done.
Mr. Sinister started his plan as soon as Magneto and Xavier went to him for the Resurrection Protocols (read House of X and Powers of X for how Krakoa came to be). He added some of his DNA to everyone that was resurrected. This way he was part of every mutant and had influence over them. Then, he found a way to add that same DNA to people all over the world by offering them an X-Gene implant. Humans took it so they’d have immortality like mutants.
After that, Sinister took out every superhero team and made the X-Men Earth’s premiere team. Then it was off to Arrako. Since Storm was never resurrected and she doesn’t have a back-up, his DNA wasn’t in her. She escaped his wrath and hasn’t been seen since. Now, the mutants stood on top of the world with Nathaniel Essex as the man behind the curtain. Unfortunately for him, his plan backfired. Sinister’s influence wasn’t enough.
The rest of the Quiet Council voted against what Mr. Sinister was doing. Sinister tried to go back to his lab and travel through time, but the X-Men got to his lab first. Now, Sinister is trapped in an empty hole all by himself with no way of escaping.
What’s next for Mr. Sinister and the X-Men
There are tie-ins to the rest of Sins of Sinister that apparently is spread over the next 1000+ years. Among those crossovers is Storm and the Brotherhood of Mutants (will replace X-Men Red). Storm and her new team will want revenge after Sinister destroyed Arakko. It’ll be interesting to see who survived the destruction of Mars. Since Storm’s back is against the wall, will she break her rule of not killing?
Plus, and this is the most important, at the end of X-Men: Sins of Sinister, Storm meets up with Destiny and Mystique. Destiny has known about this possible future for a while. If she has a plan, how long will it take to work? Is she the one behind the Nightcrawlers or the giant Exodus (Immortal X-Men No. 3)? Was she right that her wife Mystique doesn’t survive the future when it’s set right? And once everything is back to normal, will this end the Resurrection Protocols? There’s no guarantee that Mr. Sinister’s influence can be reversed.
