Another well-known toy line is getting a movie but this time with Warner Bros. and Bad Robot. Writers are attached to fill the tank of this raging franchise.
That is right, you’ve read it the first time. Hot Wheels, the toy line from the entertainment and toy manufacturer also behind the likes of Barbie, UNO, and Masters of the Universe is getting a movie.
Mattel has aligned with both Warner Bros. Pictures and Bad Robot Productions to produce the sweltering, tank-filled, racing car movie. Well, as per Deadline, they have given the film steam by tapping writers Dalton Leeb and Nicholas Jacobson-Larson to the project.
What else is Mattel Films producing outside the WBD?
In a move to compete against the growing success of Hasbro, aside from Hot Wheels, the upcoming rom-com Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig and headlined by Margot Robbie, is set for release on July 21. Masters of the Universe, which has been languishing in development hell, is set for release on Oct. 4, 2024, under Sony.
Mattel Films also plan to develop live-action films adaptions of American Girl, Barney, Magic 8 Ball, the aforesaid UNO, and so much more. Barbie, which is also co-starring Ryan Gosling, is the only Mattel I.P. that materialized.
What about the writers, cast, producers, and synopsis?
The plot is kept under wraps, though according to IMDB it may seem that the new writers are rewriting a previous draft of the film’s script penned by Big Hero 6’s Jordan Roberts, potentially using his blueprint as a foundation. Leeb and Larson sold their original sci-fi spec Endurance to Netflix with Simon Kinberg as producer.
Edgy black-comedy, Strongman; from the vantage point of British heavyweight bodybuilding champion, David Prowse (the man behind Dark Vader the mask) on the Star Wars trilogy has catapulted the writing duo to the top ten spot of 2017s The Black List.
Robbie Brenner is executive producing through Mattel Films, VPs Kevin McKeon and creative executive Andrew Scannell are leading the project while Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen oversee the live-action Hot Wheels flick for Bad Robot, and SVP Peter Dodd over at the Warner Bros. arm is managing the film.
Hot Wheels is targeted for a June 13, 2025 release date.
