4 TV shows that will probably be cancelled in 2023
The Winchesters
The Winchesters had the most-watched premiere for a new show on The CW this season, drawing almost 800K viewers. Considering that most of the network’s TV shows were getting around half of that, that’s a pretty strong premiere for the Supernatural prequel. Unfortunately, the ratings have continued to drop throughout the show’s run, never really steadying the way that fellow new show Walker: Independence did.
It certainly didn’t help that The CW inexplicably moved the show to a later timeslot and then had a rerun of the previous episode serve as a lead-in in the earlier timeslot because that simply saw the ratings decline much further – and now they are planning to move it back to the earlier timeslot before the end of its run. The show can’t catch a break, and fans can’t catch the show, because they’re never sure when it’s on anymore.
Truthfully, The Winchesters is performing solidly for The CW and any other year it would have been an easy renewal for the network that once renewed everything, but this isn’t any other year. With reports that Nexstar will only renew 3 – 4 scripted TV shows for next season (and All American already holding one of those spots), this might be a battle that not even John and Mary can win. Nexstar want to improve the network’s ratings, but the schedule changes to The Winchesters‘ first season have worked against it.
The show is great and it deserves a chance to really find its footing. Here’s hoping that The CW surprises us all and gives it that chance to grow with a second season.
