Can Harley Quinn survive the cancellations that came for so many other DC Comics shows and movies?

What do Batgirl, Doom Patrol, and Wonder Woman 3 all have in common? Each of them were canceled before their time. In this writer’s opinion, all of them would have been successful. Unfortunately, they were gone before given a chance.

2022 also saw the loss of Henry Cavill as Superman and Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam. The worst part is fans thought they were going to fight in the next Black Adam or possibly in Man of Steel 2. Alas, here we are without two of the strongest people in comic books beating each other up and causing billions in property damage. It would have been a sight to see on the big screen.

DC Comics/Warner Bros canceled more projects in 2022. Among them were Titans and Doom Patrol. Both of them will conclude at the end of their fourth season. What other DC Comics show is on its fourth season? None other that Harley Quinn on HBO Max. Makes you wonder if that show is next to get an unfortunate announcement. Hopefully not, but this writer isn’t holding his breath.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are the new people in charge of creativity with DC Studios. It may seem like an exciting job, but it comes with some negatives. Among them is dropping projects even if they’re adored by fans. The shows and movies cut may not be in their plans for a single shared DC Universe. That may not be a fun thing to acknowledge, but it’s true. It’s why Henry Cavill isn’t Superman as his Man of Steel doesn’t fit into the future Safran and Gunn envision. They want a younger Superman and Cavill isn’t that. But are the HBO Max show’s Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and the rest of the gang about to go the same way as the majority of other cancelled DC properties?

Among the new shows announced by DC Comics are Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Waller, and Creature Commandos. Waller and Creature Commandos are scheduled to be on HBO Max. As the idea is for every show and movie to eventually be part of one shared universe, that could call for Harley Quinn’s cancellation. Whatever the future holds for DC Comics movies and shows, Harley Quinn should be part of it.

Don’t cancel Harley Quinn

There hasn’t been a comic book show like Harley Quinn. The program does a great job of making the humor relatable to comic book fans and people who don’t care about the source material. There are jokes made by comic book fans that pop up in the show. For example, Bruce Wayne’s obsession with his parents, which was completely exaggerated in season 3. For non-comic book viewers, the creative team jokes on complex things like relationships and minor things like food.

The humor is great, but that’s not enough to make a show a must watch. Every episode has emotional moments. Insecurities, coming to terms with who you are, and sacrifice are only a few things you’ll see throughout. There were moments where this writer flat out teared up or thought things were hopeless. Why would DC Comics cut a show like this?

Harley Quinn has been renewed for a fourth season which will air later this year. That is a good sign as it survived the cancellation spree for now. But will it go past season 4? And when the DC Universe approaches its debut, can the show carry on if it isn’t part of that universe?

We hope it can, but if it doesn’t hopefully another streaming platform like Amazon Prime Video will grab it. Or maybe Tee Franklin will keep the universe alive in the ongoing comic book series. Wherever it ends up, you can believe fans will follow it.
