DC is bringing its new Superman to the Injustice universe
By Mark Lynch
Injustice Superman is returning in Tom Taylor’s Superman: Jon Kent. Will Jon be able to prevent the Injustice universe’s Kal-El from being killed by Ultraman or will he fall like the others?
There are some writers you can trust with any comic book character. Among them is Tom Taylor. If you look at his bibliography, you’ll see all of the classics he’s written. Among them is the DC comic book series Injustice Gods Among Us. A series that tells the parts of the video game you missed… and there was a lot of story to be told.
It wasn’t just Superman killing The Joker that made Supes a despot. There were other influences. Among them were characters like Wonder Woman and Sinestro, who pushed Kal-El in the direction that made him a tyrant. Meanwhile, Flash, Hal Jordan, and Shazam may not have liked everything that was going on, but they seemed too scared to do anything about it.
It’s been years since DC Comics has visited that universe (both the video game and the comics), but it’s time to go back. With Ultraman killing Kal-El’s all over the multiverse, Jon Kent is recruited to help stop the murders. Fans must be anticipating the rematch between Ultraman and Jon Kent. Before the inevitable fight, Jon’s mission will bring him to the Injustice universe in Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent which is also written by Tom Taylor.
Superman, Tom Taylor, and Injustice
Tom Taylor had a lot to say about writing Injustice and revisiting the Injustice Elseworld. He told DC.com:
"“…there’s a lot about Injustice that that rubs me up the wrong way. I don’t believe Superman, no matter what happens to him, can become that person. I don’t believe Wonder Woman becomes that person.”"
He also offered hope to people who didn’t like how Superman was written.
"“So, for me, it’s a really interesting Elseworld, and throwing Jon Kent as sort of that beacon of hope and in a way, quite an innocent character and a character who wants the best for the world, throwing him into that world where his father has become a dictator gives us so much to play with.”"
There must be people who feel the way Tom Taylor does. Superman is a beacon of hope. How could he become an evil person? While this writer thinks anything is possible, he understands how people feel. Maybe some characters should be above significant changes. If that’s true, Kal-El is one of them.
Tom Taylor is a name you can trust. Whatever’s next for Jon Kent and Kal-El from the Injustice universe, it will be memorable. Hopefully Jon’s innocent demeanor will be the thing that repairs the relationship between that universe’s Batman and Superman. DC Comics fans have to wait and see.
