The Flash movie feels closer than ever after the Super Bowl trailer arrived last week, but a new rumor suggests Ezra Miller may still be replaced by Grant Gustin.

For a time there (a long time), it felt like The Flash movie would never materialize. The long-gestating DCEU movie has gone through many iterations and directors in the nine years since its announcement, but it is only making its way to screens this year.

One thing that hasn’t changed in the midst of all of that is star Ezra Miller, who reprises their role from previous DCEU entries Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeSuicide Squad, and both versions of Justice League. This has caused some controversy because of the actor’s legal troubles in recent years. Their future after The Flash movie remains unclear (much like everything else in the DC Universe right now), but they will still headline the upcoming movie – as evidenced in the Super Bowl trailer.

However, a new rumor suggests that Grant Gustin, star of The CW’s highly-successful The Flash TV series, could replace him in the role by the end of the movie.

Is Grant Gustin in The Flash movie?

Grant Gustin has been rumored to have a role in The Flash movie for some time now. Most of those rumors suggest that it would be a cameo appearance (which would make sense given that Miller’s Scarlet Speedster crossed over to The CW’s Arrowverse in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover) but a more recent rumor teases the possibility of something more.

As reported by The Direct, YouTuber John Campea discussed a rumor that explored the potential possibility of Gustin replacing Miller in the title role by the end of the movie. He did admit that he didn’t “buy into it” but that “a little bird” told him that “Grant Gustin… is going to be the new Flash of the DC Universe”.

Now, there are a number of things to factor in here. First of all, The Flash is the movie to reset the DC Universe, wiping out a lot of what DC Studios would like to erase from the DCEU and resetting things so that they can essentially start again. For example, it’s expected to be the last time we see Ben Affleck as Batman, setting the stage for the DC Universe’s new Batman to take over. But as Barry Allen is the one doing this, can he suffer side effects from it too (like a new face by the end of the movie then the new timeline is created?).

Nobody knows Barry Allen better than Grant Gustin. He has played the role for nine years in the TV series (and made his debut as the character a decade ago on an episode of Arrow). But with The CW series wrapping up in May, he may wish to move on to the next chapter of his career. While a main role in a film franchise wouldn’t be as extensively exhausting as the main role in a TV show that produced 22-episodes per season for most of its run, it would be completely understandable if Gustin wanted to move onto different roles.

That said, if James Gunn and Peter Safran do move ahead with a new actor for Barry Allen going forward, there would be no better man for the job than Grant Gustin.

The Flash season 9 airs on The CW on Wednesday nights at 8/7c.
