The Mandalorian cast: Is Giancarlo Esposito in The Mandalorian season 3?
By Cody Schultz
Giancarlo Esposito was a key member of The Mandalorian cast in the first two seasons of the show, but will he be involved in the show’s third season?
Across the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, Moff Gideon is the primary antagonist for the show — one which fans adore thanks to the incredible performance of actor Giancarlo Esposito.
Moff Gideon is a former officer of the Imperial Security Bureau and is known for his cunning and ruthless tactics. Throughout both seasons, he serves as a constant threat to the Mandalorian and his allies. He’s a complex and intriguing villain, and his presence adds an extra layer of tension and danger to the already intense series which is why fans love to hate him.
In season 1, Moff Gideon is introduced as the leader of a remnant of the Galactic Empire who is seeking to capture the Child (aka Baby Yoda) for unknown purposes. He is portrayed as a calm, calculated villain who is willing to use any means necessary to achieve his goals.
In season 2, Moff Gideon becomes even more menacing as he gains possession of the Darksaber, a powerful weapon with a significant history in Mandalorian culture. He proves himself to be a formidable opponent in combat and a master manipulator, using his knowledge of the Mandalorian’s past to taunt and intimidate him.
Unfortunately for Moff Gideon, Mando is able to get the best of him during their epic battle in the season 2 finale. During their final battle, Mando spares Gideon’s life and instead brings him into custody so that he can face his crimes. It’s a moment that seemed to be set up as a possible exit storyline, but have we really seen the last of Moff Gideon and Giancarlo Esposito on the show?
Is Giancarlo Esposito part of The Mandalorian season 3 cast?
Although Moff Gideon does not appear in the season 3 premiere of The Mandalorian, Giancarlo Esposito is still listed as part of the cast for season 3 of Disney Plus’ hit Star Wars series. In a press release shared by Disney, Esposito’s name is included in the season’s short cast list which includes Pedro Pascal, Katee Sackhoff, Carl Weathers, Amy Sedaris, and Emily Swallow.
Given Moff Gideon is not slated to play a major role in the show’s third season, it’s likely that Esposito’s role in The Mandalorian season 3 will be limited. However, the fact that he is included in the season 3 cast list does suggest we should see him appear in at least one episode this season, possibly more.
Will Moff Gideon be in The Mandalorian season 3?
While it’s unclear when we might see him appear, it is expected that Moff Gideon will be in The Mandalorian season 3. The character of Moff Gideon was very much alive and well when we last saw him, and he’s long been a key player in the show’s narrative. The storyline involving Moff Gideon was wrapped in the show’s second season, but actor Giancarlo Esposito is listed as part of the season 3 cast which suggests we’ll see him appear in at least one episode this season to reprise his role as Moff Gideon.
What happened to Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian?
When we last saw Moff Gideon back in The Mandalorian season 2 finale, he had been taken into custody following defeat in battle against Mando. The character did not appear in any of The Book of Boba Fett episodes which were used to bridge the gap between season 2 and season 3 of The Mandalorian, but we finally get a brief update on where Gideon is during The Mandalorian season 3 premiere.
While Gideon does not appear in the episode, it is revealed in the season 3 premiere that he was sent off to a New Republic War Tribunal. No additional information is provided, but it seems likely we’ll officially catch up with the character sometime this season.
