Jason Momoa wants out of Aquaman role due to flawed sequel
Say it ain’t so… it looks like the role of Arthur Curry may be left open as Jason Momoa could be vacating Aquaman when the DCU comes into full effect.
There is a report which came fairly recently from The Direct that Jason Momoa, who has played Arthur Curry aka Aquaman for approximately seven years starting with a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, may exit the role of Aquaman due to the lousy quality of the upcoming sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Rumors close to the outlet suggest things don’t appear to be shaping up quite well as test screenings for the film have performed below expectations. Some even suggest it could be one of the worst DCU movies to date. However, the question is how bad could it possibly be? Is it Batgirl level or is 2017’s theatrical cut of Justice League bad?
The rumor came from Hollywood insider, Jeff Sneider, who has a reputable track record of having covered scoops for Collider. Take this with a grain of salt of course. Although this was his statement:
"“I hear it’s terrible and that’s why Momoa is gonna be Lobo going forward. But they can’t say that yet because then it would be a lame duck… and DC is hoping to wring another billion out of the box office. First one was awful too, so not a huge surprise.”"
What future is in store for Jason Momoa within the DCU?
Above all else, Schneider’s lasting dig at the original 2018 Aquaman film can be considered quite hyperbolic to at the very least facetious. If looking at a critical eye, The Lost Kingdom’s predecessor does have its flaws, most criticizing its on-the-nose dialog in the film’s script and story, though praised its cinematography, action sequences, and VFX. Another caveat is the lack of chemistry between Momoa with Amber Heard’s Mera.
In regards to Momoa’s DCU future, let’s not jump the gun just yet. We have no idea what is in store for Momoa, whether he is even bestowed another completely different role, to begin with, or being promoted to another project under WBD at DC Studios.
Momoa, a screenwriter and filmmaker in his spare time, and who contributed to this sequel’s story may have been given the green light for another third installment of the sea-dwelling hero. For all, we know he may have even been granted the role of producer for this or another DCU project.
Chances are we have to wait and see. Besides, Schneider said the same for Marvel’s Disney Plus series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law having production trouble, and reception was mixed to positive with it being most favorable amongst critics.
