Marvel’s What If…? season 2 gets disheartening release date update
What If…? season 2 has remained something of a mystery, but a recent release update suggests that the wait will unfortunately continue for a lot longer.
Of all the Marvel Studios shows on the horizon, it’s What If…? that has remained a mystery the most. The animated series is the only other returning show from the studio’s original batch of Disney Plus shows (alongside Loki) and yet, there has been very little chatter about when we can expect it.
The first season was very much considered part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but when Kevin Feige unveiled the Phase Five graphic at San Diego Comic-Con, What If…? season 2 was nowhere to be seen – even though it was confirmed that it would premiere in early 2023 during the Marvel Studios Animation panel at the same event.
It’s become increasingly clear that this won’t be the case after all, and a new update has reinforced this, suggesting that the wait for the second season will continue for some time.
What If…? season 2 release date updates
A recent tweet from entertainment scooper KC Walsh suggests that What If…? season 2 could have an early 2024 release, with it premiering on Disney Plus in the first quarter of the year. That same tweet also adds that the already-confirmed third season could potentially premiere in 2025.
This has not yet been confirmed by Marvel Studios, but as the they are currently reshaping their release strategy to offer up a “less is more” approach, it is entirely possible that this is exactly what they plan on doing. The early 2023 release date is out the window at this point, especially with Secret Invasion expected to be the first MCU show of the year.
Loki season 2 got a similarly disappointing update as it’s now expected in late summer, and with either Echo or Ironheart now expected to be the final MCU release of 2023, What If…? could realistically be bumped to next year instead.
It’s disheartening for fans ready to see more adventures for Captain Carter, The Watcher, and more What If…? faves, but it’s a little more clarity than we had before, so at least there’s that.
