The cancellation of Black Adam was a mistake (and here’s why)
By Evan Mead
In the past, DC has made a lot of mistakes. And even though there is a change in ownership, it feels like old times with the cancellation of Black Adam.
DC has been in complete disarray over the last couple of years with so many changes going on in both leadership and casting. Furthermore, they have a problem with following through on projects. When things don’t bring in the numbers you hope, DC tends to just cancel those projects and start over completely. The latest film that had that happen was Black Adam.
What makes Marvel such an exciting universe is their ability to stick with their projects no matter what. If a film doesn’t do well, they don’t just start over and cancel that hero, no. Instead, they work to improve the writing and the production to try and make it better. That’s something DC has struggled with.
Now, I know that they have had a change of leadership and therefore, they might’ve felt that Black Adam isn’t part of their plan. However, Black Adam was a solid film with so much potential.
Why canceling Black Adam was a mistake
In Black Adam, we got a look at Teth-Adam and his story. We got to learn about how he got his powers, what makes him the way he is, and got a look at the history of Kahndaq. We learn about the legend of Ahk-Ton and the Crown of Sabbac and just how much power it holds. Now, to many that doesn’t sound like an overly exciting plot to a movie, I know. However, you don’t know what you don’t know and what you don’t know is that this movie isn’t just about Black Adam. No. It’s also about the Justice Society.
In the movie, once Black Adam was awakened from a 5,000-year sleep, he immediately created havoc in Kahndaq. Amanda Waller then makes a call to Carter Hall otherwise known as the superhero, Hawkman. Waller approaches Hall and asks him to assemble a team to take him down before he does any more damage. Hall then makes a call to some friends of his and assembles the team known as The Justice Society.
This team had four heroes on it: Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone. Now, I’m sure you’re asking why this matters. Well, let me tell you.
Hawkman and the way his character was portrayed by Aldis Hodge would have made for a perfect spin-off movie where we get to see Hawkman’s upbringing and learn about his courage and leadership. Additionally, we could get a look at how he got mixed up with ARGUS and Amanda Waller. As for Doctor Fate, let’s be real, he stole the show from Black Adam.
For those of you who saw the movie, I know that a majority of you can agree that Black Adam deserved a stand-alone film similar to what Black Widow got. Doctor Fate, who was portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, had a comedic side to him that made the movie so much more enjoyable. But that was nothing compared to the post-credit scene.
The post-credit scene opened with a drone coming down from the sky which prompted Black Adam to get up from his throne. The drone then displayed a hologram of Amanda Waller and she then had a conversation with Black Adam about him coming to work for her and threatened that if he didn’t she’d send people who can defeat him. In this case, it was her hinting at Superman. But what made it so great was that it was DC’s way of announcing Henry Cavill’s return as Superman.
It was not even a couple of weeks later that James Gunn announced that Henry Cavill was released from his duties as Superman and that Black Adam was getting canceled. So once again, one of the best post-credit scenes we’ve had was scratched and nothing is coming to fruition. It’s for that reason that scratching Black Adam is such a mistake.
They could’ve set up so many good films with this movie but instead, we are left wondering, will DC ever be able to truly stick to a script? Only time will tell.
