Who plays Ellie’s mother Anna in HBO’s The Last of Us?
The Last of Us’ season finale will introduce us to Ellie’s mother Anna. But who plays her in episode 9 and where have you seen her before?
The Last of Us has been a compelling story essentially just centred on two characters. That said, we shouldn’t overlook the importance of some of the characters that Ellie and Joel have met on their journey, and how they ultimately helped them on their way to their destination.
The show has a bit of a knack for introducing new characters in each episode, all of whom have become pivotal to the story. Tess? They wouldn’t have made it far without her. Bill and Frank? We all fell in love with their love story, which pushed both Joel and Ellie harder in their bid to protect each other. Sam and Henry? They taught us the value of family and friendship in a world with little of either.
The season finale will introduce us to perhaps the most important character of all: Ellie’s mother, Anna. But where have you seen the actress bringing her to life before, and why is she so important to The Last of Us franchise already?

Anna is played by Ashley Johnson in The Last of Us TV series. If that name rings a bell for you video game fans, it should, because Johnson portrayed Ellie in The Last of Us video game series, playing her via motion capture and voicework in the original 2013 video game, DLC expansion pack The Last of Us: Left Behind, and the official sequel The Last of Us Part II.
On the live-action side of things, Johnson is known for her appearances in films such as What Women Want, The Help, and Much Ado About Nothing. She’s also been a mainstay of television, starring in the final two seasons of Growing Pains as a child before going on to appear in the likes of Ally McBeal, Roswell, The Killing, and Blindspot – the latter of which she played a major role in as the character of Patterson.
As well as her performances in The Last of Us games, she’s had a prolific voice acting career in animation, voicing characters in shows such as Teen Titans, Recess, Ben 10, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teen Titans GO!, and Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!.
It’s wonderful to see her performance as Ellie honored with such an important role in the TV series. We can’t wait to see Ashley bring Anna to life.
