The Last of Us returns to HBO and HBO Max for its season 1 finale. Is the ninth and final episode of the season a longer one or a shorter one?
After eight gripping episodes, The Last of Us is set to conclude its first season this weekend. It’s been a journey watching Joel and Ellie trek across the country in the hopes of finding, well, hope. And now, they are possibly just one episode away from finding it.
Using Ellie’s immunity as a means of finding a cure or vaccine to the cordyceps infection was just part of their journey, though, as The Last of Us has been as much about their growing bond as it has been about survival. And that bond was clearer than ever after the eighth episode’s emotional conclusion, which saw a strong but frightened Ellie, desperate to survive, and a recovering Joel, desperate to save her, find their way back to each other.
It was a quietly powerful moment that signified just how much they care about each other and it set the stage for what will undoubtedly be an equally as powerful finale. But just how long will that finale be?
How long is The Last of Us episode 9?
The Last of Us episode 9, titled “Look For The Light”, has a runtime of just 46 minutes. You might be surprised to learn that this makes the finale the second-shortest episode of the whole season, coming in just behind the fourth episode’s 41 minutes runtime.
The episode lengths have been quite the discussion for fans, as some of the earlier installments had huge 85 minute runtimes, while some of the in-between and succeeding episodes had much shorter lengths of 45 – 50 minutes.
It’s surprising to see that the HBO show’s finale is on the shorter end, but The Last of Us has a reputation for quality over quantity – emphasized by the fact that some of its finest episodes are its shorter ones. We don’t expect the season finale to be any different.
