Shazam! Fury of the Gods opened with less than $35 million in its first weekend, coming well under projections. Shazam 2 might be in trouble…

Ever since Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ release on March 17, domestically, a lot of trades in the industry and other media outlets covered its shocking and meager numbers for a blockbuster juggernaut such as this.

Prior to release, Deadline reported it was predicted to have an $85 million worldwide debut, with an estimated $35-$40 million domestic opening. Instead, the film opened to a meager $30.5 million domestically with a worldwide debut of just $65 million.

Why we might need to worry?

Compared to the original film released back in 2019, Fury of the Gods is a slightly bigger project with a $25-$35 million increase in production budget with the marketing campaign a lot bigger by a wide margin.

The previous film back then made $366 million worldwide against a $100 million production budget. They made a net profit of $74 million  factoring in expenses and other financial breakdowns other than gross revenue. The film opened to $53 million in its opening weekend, $23 million more than its “Shazamily” counterpart.

If it was in the $80 million range as projected before or even as low as $55-$60 million that would be more in the healthier range. Fury of the Gods cannot afford a huge second-week drop otherwise it could cement this film’s fate as a box office bomb.

Is there any hope for Fury of the Gods?

As a rough estimate, Fury of the Gods may possibly need up to north of over $250-$300 million to break even and at least a range of $400-$500 million to make a decent net profit. Of course, we do not have the full numbers right in front of us.

There is also the case that there are still more territories that have yet to be opened up. However, the fact it bombed in China with $4.4 million does not help matters. At the moment the numbers are comparable to other DCEU movies like The Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman 1984 that opened during COVID times.

As it stands, Fury of the Gods sits at $68.8 million against an approximate $120 million budget. We just have to wait until the numbers from this weekend’s drop and see how it turns out.
