Liv Tyler will reprise her role as Betty Ross in the MCU for the first time in over a decade in Captain America: New World Order.

After some speculation, it was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Liv Tyler is reprising her role as scientist Betty Ross in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Captain America: New World Order.

It has been 15 years since Tyler has played the role with her first and only appearance thus far being in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. That movie is an all-but-forgotten part of the MCU, as star Edward Norton was replaced by Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk from 2012’s The Avengers onwards. However, the one semi-regular connection has been General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, with the late William Hurt reprising his role in multiple movies after Hulk before his death, such as Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Black Widow.

Betty Ross is the character’s daughter, a renowned cellular biologist, and the love interest of Bruce Banner, a.k.a. the Hulk. While she has not been seen since the 2008 film, it does feel like Marvel Studios is starting to acknowledge the movie’s existence more in recent years. Tim Roth reprised his role as Emil Blonsky, a.k.a. the Abomination, on She-Hulk: Attorney At Law for Disney Plus, while Tim Blake Nelson will also return as The Leader in Captain America 4. General Ross will reappear in the movie too, but he will now be played by Harrison Ford.

What could Betty Ross be doing in Captain America: New World Order?

While plot details for New World Order are still very much under wraps, some rumors suggest Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross, who has since become Secretary of State, is making a power move to the White House and is being attacked by a familiar and nefarious threat in The Leader.

Betty Ross has a history with Leader as his civilian alter-ego Dr. Samuel Sterns, who got splashed with Hulk blood in his open wound when we last saw him. Perhaps she could help Mackie’s Sam Wilson defeat him, utilizing her expertise in gamma mutates like her ex-boyfriend.

Captain America: New World Order stars Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, Shira Haas, Harrison Ford, and Liv Tyler.

Julius Onah is directing from a screenplay by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. Kevin Feige and Nate Moore are producing for Marvel Studios under Walt Disney Studios.

Mackie’s high-flying Capt. is set to don the jet-pack All-American stripes on the big screen in theaters on May 3, 2024.
