Shazam! Fury of the Gods might be coming to digital on April 18, but fans will have to wait much longer for the movie to arrive on HBO Max.

From the moment it was announced that Shazam! Fury of the Gods would be getting an early Digital release, fans have been eager to know whether the film would also be making its way to HBO Max earlier than expected as well.

It was an understandable question to have as no one expected Warner Bros. to release the sequel on Digital nearly a month after the movie had opened in theaters, so why not assume that the movie might arrive on streaming earlier than most movies as well?

While Fury of the Gods might be arriving on Digital on April 18, fans hoping to watch the movie on HBO Max will have to wait several weeks after the film’s digital release before it will be streaming on HBO Max.

Shazam Fury of the Gods HBO Max release date

On April 12 during a presentation promoting the upcoming rebranding of HBO Max to Max, HBO Max revealed Shazam! Fury of the Gods will begin streaming on the platform on Tuesday, May 23 — aka the day HBO Max will officially become Max. The soft relaunch for the rebrand is likely the reason the new film will be coming on a Tuesday, as most HBO movies have typically come later in the week on Thursday or Friday.

The May 23 release date for the film is a tad later than many fans had expected as many were anticipating the film would arrive 60 days after its theatrical release which would have meant a May 16 HBO Max streaming release date. Instead, the film will arrive on HBO Max 67 days after Shazam! Fury of the Gods opened in theaters on March 17.

Given how much the film underperformed at the box office, it’ll be interesting to see how the sequel fairs once it hits HBO Max. Considering it will arrive on a Tuesday, we don’t imagine many will be racing to watch it right away but then again, maybe fans will surprise us.
