10. Loki

To start the top 10, it has to be one of the greatest anti-heroes of the entire Avengers storyline. And he’s not even an Avenger. In fact, as the villain of the original story, he helped give a reason for the Avengers to come together.

Yes, it’s all about Loki, the Trickster God. Like Thor, Stan Lee did not have a hand in creating the Norse God, but he did adapt the mythological lore for the comic series. And what a character he created! This is one that has a world of potential even today.

The character was one of Stan Lee’s earliest creations, first appearing in 1962 in Journey into Mystery #85. As the adopted brother and sometimes the enemy of Thor, he’s been in several series, long-term, limited, and even his own “Loki” series that started in 2004. We just can’t get enough of the Trickster.

In 2013, he started appearing in the Young Avengers issue and then got a second solo series, Loki: Agent of Asgard in 2013 followed by Vote Loki in 2016. He is a character that you can never kill. Unless you’re Thanos, that is.

One of the things that makes Loki so great is that, like Scarlet Witch, he’s not completely evil. This is a character that easily straddles good and bad but for entirely different reasons than the mutant-destroying twin. He only looks out for himself. If something doesn’t serve him, then he’s not that interested.

His only weakness is his brother. That’s been seen time and time again, especially in the movie adaptations. Maybe that’s just because fans adore Tom Hiddleston and refuse to see him as purely the villain.
