Creature Commandos, the first project in DC’s next chapter of its extended universe, just got a release window and it’s sooner than you think.
For many years DC tried to create a cohesive and intricate cinematic universe under the helm of Zack Snyder. Its main purpose was to build a series of projects that would see a team of heroes brought together to face one of the universe’s greatest threats: Darkseid. And while this was supposed to be DC’s way of standing tall and competing against the MCU, not everything went as expected.
Some films failed to meet both critical and financial success. Not only that but multiple controversies involving people working in the DCEU also arouse. Consequently, the decision was made to start everything from scratch. While many people still question if it was the right way to go, a blank slate was inevitably introduced.
That’s how Gods and Monsters, the first chapter in this new universe, came to be. With James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm, multiple projects were slated to release over the next few years. And what better way to kick things off than with Creature Commandos?
Creature Commandos release date rumors
The animated series is the first project to be part of this new era in the DCEU. But even when we got a good look at the concept art for the series back in January, we didn’t get to know its release window. However, that might have just changed thanks to a tweet.
James Gunn is well-known for answering fan questions on Twitter. So when he was asked if Creature Commandos would release in 2024, a reply just had to be made. You can take a look at the tweets below:
While it’s not a specific date, it’s a good sign we’re slowly getting more news about the series. The cast list was also announced recently, meaning things are moving forward pretty well in pre-production. At this pace, we’re sure to hear more about it through the course of this year. Even so, perhaps the biggest takeaway is that we’re not too far away from seeing a new face of the DCEU.
Back in the Gods and Monsters‘ reveal video, James Gunn promised that characters that appeared in animated series and videogames would be the same incarnations as those in movies. Therefore, every single new project could have big repercussions moving forward regardless of its genre. That, coupled with the fact that Creature Commandos is the stepping stone for this new DC era, positions the series as a must-see for any comic book fan.
While the military super team that fought in World War II is relatively unknown, they might just be the answer that DC was looking for all along. After all, Marvel kicked off the MCU with a character that wasn’t popular back then as well.
