Marvel: Nightcrawler tries something new in Uncanny Spider-Man
By Mark Lynch
Nightcrawler will become Spider-Man in an upcoming Marvel Comic limited series. Here’s what we know so far and why this makes sense.
The X-Men have gone from having their dream realized to seeing it become a nightmare. The upcoming X-Men: Hellfire Gala will bring the Fall of X. Marvel has been tight lipped with what’s going to happen, but the title may say it all. This could be the end of Krakoa.
If this writer had to guess, this will be felt in the Quiet Council first. Among the people who will be affected by this is Quiet Council member Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler). According to Marvel.com, Nightcrawler will be, “crushed under the weight of this new age.” This leads into Kurt Wagner’s five-part limited series Uncanny Spider-Man.
Writer Si Spurrier will be writing Uncanny Spider-Man. It makes sense since he’s been penning Kurt for the last couple of years in Way of X and Legion of X. He says, “What we’ve got here is a spectacular new beginning – which, yes, is code for ‘perfect jumping-on point’ – which leans hard into heroic, joyful, street-level action,”
When this writer heard that Nightcrawler was becoming Spider-Man, he wasn’t shocked. Spider-Man and Nightcrawler are a lot alike. They’re both morally strong, never resort to killing someone, and are both hated by the public. They’re both jokesters that use humor to distract their enemies and mask their insecurities. Agility is a big part of their fighting style as well. If it wasn’t for the way they looked, people may think they were the same person. Which brings in their major difference. Nightcrawler can’t hide how he looks. This forces him to maneuver differently since he can’t take his mask off and just exist without fear and hatred. Spider-Man can always be Peter Parker.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens in Uncanny Spider-Man. Will Kurt Wagner become another Marvel Comics character to embrace the Spidey lineage on a regular basis? Will Nightcrawler leaving spark more mutants to abandon Krakoa? Who will take Kurt’s place if he leaves the Quiet Council for good? More importantly, how does Peter Parker feel about this?
