All 9 Planet of the Apes movies ranked from worst to best
2. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
Outside of the original film, this entry probably has the most subtext and social commentary. With dogs and cats dead from a space virus, humanity took apes as pets until they realized that would be better as slaves and began using them for just that. The police are all in black with daily announcements and fascism all the rage.
Enter Caesar. The spawn of the talking Apes from the future, Zira and Cornelious. He’s been living in the circus all this time, far away from the prying eyes of humanity that wants him dead. Eventually, he starts an uprising that burns into a revolution.
The film’s original ending was so controversial that it had to be re-edited with new dialogue by Roddy McDowell making things a little more palatable for audiences in light of the civil uprising and the Watts riots.
The special effects are impressive for its time, and the acting is commendable, particularly that of Roddy McDowall, who portrays Caesar, the leader of the ape revolution. The movie addresses themes of oppression, rebellion, and the dangers of power. It’s a thought-provoking and entertaining film that leaves the audience with a lot to ponder and is hands down one of the best installments in the franchise.
