Seems like there is still a lifeline on the Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams Superman reboot.

Over ten months ago in April 2022, a Superman reboot produced by J.J. Abrams with a screenplay penned by Ta-Nehisi Coates seemed unlikely, but with co-CEO and co-chairman of the rebranded DC Studios having unveiled the slate of films and shows as part of Chapter 1 of the DCU, a nail seemed to have been in place for the coffin. But the nail hasn’t been driven in quite yet. Or so it seems?

Via io9 (H/T: as per IGN), James Gunn, whose MCU film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released just days ago has stated although Superman: Legacy has been green-lit and is in early production, it does not mean the Abrams and Coates project with a Black lead actor as Superman is out of the woods just yet. Gunn made things clear that Superman stores not part of mainline continuity can be part of DC Elseworlds.

Gunn whilst discussing the topic of the Black Superman reboot and his film Superman: Legacy said: “Those two things are totally unrelated.”

"“That’s an exciting movie. I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it. So if that comes in and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen. That’s totally unrelated. It would be an Elseworlds tale like Joker.”"

So is the J.J. Abrams Superman reboot happening?

This is not a confirmation that the Abrams and Coates Black Superman reboot will happen, though what is clarified is that this is not going to be placed under the axe… for now. There is always room for parallel stories featuring alternate versions of similar DC characters on DC productions ala The Batman – Part II and The Brave and the Bold running concurrently with one another.

Keep in mind that Michael B. Jordan’s Val-Zod Superman HBO Max series is so far still in the works under his production company, Outlier Society. As of March this year, nothing has been revealed, though writers Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters were attached to pen the series.

No further updates regarding the Abrams and Coates Superman project except that filmmaker and executive Hannah Minghella joined as producer under Warner Bros., DC, and Bad Robot in February 2021.
