MCU: All 11 Marvel Phase 3 movies ranked from worst to best
8. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Before Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s release, everybody was wondering how Marvel was going to reboot the Spider-Man franchise for the third time and still make it fresh and exciting. While that seemed like an impossible task, especially after Andrew Garfield’s saga failed to resonate with audiences, they definitely pulled it off.
First and foremost, there was no retelling of Spidey’s origin story time around. Instead, the movie focused on making Peter Parker feel like a real teenager who goes to school and is preoccupied with everyday problems like the homecoming dance. Moreover, he was actually excited to become a superhero, unlike previous iterations of the character that felt their superpowers were a burden most of the time. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man managed to be unique in its very own way while still maintaining the wall-crawler’s essence, and that is no easy feat at all.
However, some of the changes made to this version of Spider-Man were not as well received as Marvel might have hoped. Peter’s over-reliance on using Stark Tech was a controversial decision, to say the least. Coupled with how he didn’t care to keep his identity a secret for the most part and there are a few negative details that you can highlight in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Fortunately, the film had many more positives that made it an enjoyable experience deserving of critical acclaim.
One of its greatest strengths was Michael Keaton’s Vulture. He managed to be a menacing villain that pushed Spider-Man both on a physical and emotional level. The twist where it was revealed Adrian Toomes was the father of Peter’s date for homecoming was brilliantly executed. It added a lot of tension and depth to what was an already great film. And when you take into account there are also other amazing supporting characters like Jacob Batalon’s Ned, it’s easy to see why Spider-Man: Homecoming was such a big success for the MCU.
