Four of the most popular X-Men are having doubts about Krakoa and could be leaving the island nation for good.

When the mutant nation of Krakoa was first established, the X-Men and all of their heroes made it a point to protect every mutant in the world. It was supposed to be more than a place for mutants to live. Krakoa was supposed to set an example for the rest of the world. Maybe even the universe.  Unfortunately, nothing good lasts forever. Especially when you’re a mutant.

In the last year, Krakoa has become like everywhere else in the world. It’s turned into a nation full of lies, betrayal, and murder. This has caused some key mutants to leave Krakoa or stop believing in their nation. What’s worse are these four of the mutants that left or are leaving are the heart and soul of the X-Men and mutants in general.

Wolverine

Wolverine had his issues with Krakoa from the beginning (read X-Force No. 1 by Benjamin Percy for more on that). He said living in a place of peace leaves mutants less aware of the danger around them. Something they need to survive in the real world. Despite having his reservations, Logan continued to fight and die for Krakoa and all mutants. Then Hank McCoy turned on him.

As this article is being written, Logan hasn’t officially abandoned Krakoa. However, he’s stated on a few occasions that he didn’t believe in the nation and has left X-Force. Beast using his body and Xavier turning a blind eye to what he was doing is likely going to cause Logan to leave Krakoa. Although don’t be shocked if something weird happens to him before that happens. Maybe Logan’s memory gets erased, or he’s sent to The Pit.

Storm

Storm is one of the greatest X-Men ever. Even when she lost her powers, she remained their leader. This led to her being one of the obvious choices to join the Quiet Council of Krakoa. She’s also the last of the original members remaining at the Summer Council table (more on the other two people in the next sections). After her previous conversation with Xavier (X-Men Red No. 11) and Emma Frost (Immortal X-Men No. 11) it looks like Storm could be on her way out of Krakoa.

In Immortal X-Men, Storm took offense to Emma Frost saying that she (Storm) was partly responsible for Sinister taking over the galaxy (Sins of Sinister). In X-Men Red, Charles Xavier violated Storm’s mind. She left him saying that Xavier could no longer use the gate to Arrako and that they are no longer friends.

Storm has stated that she will spend more time taking care of issues with Arrako. This could lead to her eventually leaving the Quiet Council permanently. This wouldn’t be shocking since Arrako (formerly Mars) holds a special place in Storm’s heart. If she leaves, the only person left with a conscience could be Kate Pryde.

Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler has officially taken time away from Krakoa. The most disheartening part is that he lost hope in Krakoa. He said, “I have tried so hard to navigate this dream of joy and hope. With my conscience held before me… and yet it seems to me that one of the dangers of trying to become a people, is that we forget how to be people.” Sure, this is leading to the Uncanny Spider-Man and Kurt will likely return to Krakoa, but his absence will be felt. If he’s lost faith, then who’s next? No one has faith in things turning good as he does.

Without Nightcrawler at the Summer Table, the only full-time member left is Colossus. And, unbeknownst to everyone else, his evil brother is influencing Colossus’ moves.

Jean Grey

Recently, Marvel Comics announced that Jean Grey’s life would soon, be “in shambles.” Back in X-Men No. 20, Jean had issues with Cyclops being ok with killing all of the Brood. While their relationship has been great for the last couple of years, fans know that wasn’t going to last forever. That was only the first of what appears to be many things to affect Jean Grey in her solo series.

Jean was the first person from the Summer Table to leave. After X of Swords, she wanted to focus more on saving people. She’s been doing that, but recent events in Krakoa could be giving her doubts. Plus, she could be replaced by Kate Pryde (who’s joining the X-Men soon). Her solo series could stop the end of Krakoa or it could continue with the nation’s downfall. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out which it is.
