17. Catherine Hamilton-Kane

Catherine Hamilton-Kane was a hard character to read during her brief stint on Batwoman. With only occasional appearances throughout the first half of the first season (many of which featured her acting suspiciously), it soon became clear that there were more layers to this character than we initially anticipated.

But, in spite of her flaws, Catherine was, above all else, a mother. And her love for her daughter Mary couldn’t have been more clear than it was when she made the ultimate sacrifice, and allowed herself to die so that her child could live.

When Alice poisoned the pair, she left only enough Desert Rose antidote for one of them. In spite of Mary’s insisting that they share the antidote, Catherine ensured that her daughter took it, before the pair then shared a truly heartbreaking moment together – during which Catherine revealed to Mary that she knew about her secret clinic all along and expressed her pride.

Catherine was a flawed character, but there was love there. And in spite of her mistakes, she was a hero in the end, saving the life of her daughter in what was undoubtedly one of the most tear-jerking moments in both Batwoman and Arrowverse history.
