11. Friday the 13th (2009)

While sticking to the formula of Friday the 13th, this still falls quite short. More of a CW drama with a hockey-masked killer than a full-on slasher, this is far and away the best remake that Platinum Dunes ever let loose onto the world.

They tried to pack all of the history we DO know about Jason into one movie. From Mrs. Voorhees to the sack on his head all the way to the hockey mask. The pacing was just absolutely a complete mess.

The characters were only given enough depth to make them passable on screen but you never really care about any of them. Not that caring about characters in a slasher picture is a prerequisite, but this was basically mannequins with pretty hair and clear skin.

The one really amazing stand-out in the film was Derek Mears. Stepping into the role of Jason Voorhees is a very tough thing to do and while he isn’t Kane Hodder, he made the role his own. That’s something that is tough to do when there are so many different actors to take from. Not only that but he was honored to do it. He grew up with the role and is really the one thing that wasn’t totally messed up.

One plot point in this movie really bothers me. Jason thinks the female lead in the film is his mother because she resembles the woman in a locket that he has. First, if that IS his mother, why keep her hidden away? Secondly, when does Jason ever take hostages? Just so many questions we will never have the answer to.
