The CW has made a decision about the future of DC TV hit Superman and Lois, confirming that it will return for a fourth season.
The CW has renewed Superman and Lois for a fourth season. It will consist of 10 episodes.
As reported by TVLine, CW President Brad Schwartz revealed that network is “thrilled” to bring the show back for another season, adding that it and fellow renewed show All American: Homecoming are two of their “strongest performers across our linear and digital platforms with some of the most passionate fanbases in all of television”.
The DC TV series had been on the bubble along with fellow DC series Gotham Knights and All American: Homecoming as the network figured out whether it wanted to renew any other shows for a new season. It had already renewed Walker and All American at this point (the latter of which was reportedly agreed as part of the sale of the network). Gotham Knights has since been cancelled.
The reason that The CW was taking so long to decide on the fate of these three shows was down to the fact that new owners Nexstar are trying to turn it into a profitable network. As a result, The CW is moving away from producing original scripted programming and placing much of its focus on unscripted originals and scripted acquisitions. This had already resulted in the cancellation of shows new shows Walker: Independence, and The Winchesters, as well as veteran series Kung Fu (which was cancelled after three seasons).
Superman and Lois has been a huge hit and it is still one of The CW’s two most-watched programs. It was also one of the few to receive an early renewal last year ahead of Nexstar’s purchase of the network. But as its third season has been airing, reports suggested that the network was cautious about renewing it for a fourth season because it’s more expensive to produce (while Gotham Knights is much cheaper). According to The Hollywood Reporter, a move to HBO Max was a possibility as The CW was determined to keep at least one DC property on the network and it could have been leaning in Gotham Knights‘ direction.
The show’s third season has received acclaim from fans and critics. Premiering back in March, it has seen Lois Lane battle cancer as she and Clark Kent attempt to take down Bruno Mannheim. Elizabeth Tulloch’s performance has been absolutely spectacular, as this show once again highlighted why it was the best superhero show on television and one of the best adaptations of the Superman lore of all time.
