Modern-day horror legend James Wan has made a name for himself in the genre through the long list of movies he’s directed as well as the franchises he’s created. From the Saw movies to The Conjuring Universe and his memorable standalone films like Dead Silence and Malignant, any spooky movie fan is familiar with his work. Wan also created the Insidious movie series alongside his writing partner Leigh Whannell, which currently has four installments and a fifth on the way.

Similar to other projects by Wan, the Insidious movies deal with supernatural elements after demonic entities target a family. The first movie revolves around the Lamberts, a husband and wife whose son Dalton slips into a coma without any explanation. As they seek out help from paranormal investigators, they realize Dalton has inadvertently traveled into a place called The Further where spirits live.

The Insidious movies have varied in quality, but the one constant fans can count on is the strong performances, whether that be from Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, or Lin Shaye. The upcoming movie in the franchise, Insidious: The Red Door, takes place 10 years after the events of Insidious 2 and will see all three actors reprise their roles, as well as Ty Simpkins as Dalton.

Ahead of the fifth Insidious movie, which hits theaters on July 7, 2023, we’re breaking down each installment in the series so far and ranking them from worst to best.
