Marvel Comics: Scarlet Witch Annual No. 1 starts the Contest of Chaos

Scarlet Witch Annual No. 1 ends with Agatha Harkness setting up the Marvel Comics event, Contest of Chaos.

The Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful characters in any universe she’s in. Every so often her strength levels take a hit, but she always returns to peak form. Most of this is thanks to her teacher, Agatha Harkness.

For years, Agatha taught Wanda how to properly use her powers. Unfortunately, she’s failed. Wanda found out she gave birth to twins that didn’t really exist.  This leads to Avengers: Disassembled where readers discover Wanda killed Agatha. Like most Marvel Comics characters, Agatha eventually came back (Scarlet Witch: The Final Hex).

Wanda would continue to show feats of strength throughout comic books. But, writer Steve Orlando had bigger plans for the Scarlet Witch.

Before Steve Orlando started his Marvel Comics run of Scarlet Witch, he set out to unlock Wanda’s true potential. He did that within the first five issues of his run. Now we come to his sixth issue, Scarlet Witch Annual No. 1 where Wanda gets her first real test by her former teacher, Agatha. Except, this isn’t her old and weathered former teacher. Agatha’s body is young again and she’s more powerful than ever (this happened during the Marvel Comics’ mini-series Midnight Suns).

Their battle begins before the magic altercation does. Agatha put Brood eggs into Wanda’s tea. The Scarlet Witch shakes it off and they continue to fight throughout the realms. In the end, Wanda defeats her teacher. However, this was all part of Agatha’s plan.

Everything Agatha from the Brood eggs to their magical battle was used to weaken her former pupil. The issue concludes with Agatha defeating Chthon and ripping his heart out of his chest. Why did she do this? Agatha wants to be the strongest sorcerer in the universe. In order for this to happen, she has to survive the Marvel Comics event Contest of Chaos.

Marvel Comics Contest of Chaos

According to Marvel.com, the Contest of Chaos, “will center around Agatha’s quest to bring Chaos magic to the forefront so she can take her rightful place as one of the universe’s greatest sorcerers.” First, she’ll orchestrate a tournament where Marvel heroes corrupted by chaos will be forced to fight each other.

The participants include Storm, Moon Knight, Iron Man, Ghost-Spider, Captain Marvel, Cyclops, Ghost Rider, Venom, Taegukgi, Deadpool, and more. If that’s not enough, the first fight will be Wolverine versus Spider-Man. That’s a heck of a way to start this event.
