Production on Deadpool 3 was halted in July 2023 after SAG-AFTRA went on strike. Well, thanks to director Shawn Levy, we just learned how many days of production on Deadpool 3 are left before the movie moves into post-production.
Levy commented on the film in a new interview with Collider in September 2023. At the time of publishing, the AMPTP has not successfully negotiated a deal with the WGA or SAG unions to bring members back to set and writers’ rooms. For the most part, the entire TV and film industry has shut down for US productions, including Deadpool 3.
We’ve also seen the Deadpool 3 first look, and it features a fan-favorite character from the X-Men movies, maybe the most popular X-Men of all time.
Deadpool 3 is one of the most highly anticipated Marvel movies of the next few years. Everyone’s excited to see what’s next for Wade Wilson/Deadpool, especially after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, which produced the first two Deadpool movies.
We shared everything we know so far about Deadpool 3 as of Monday, Sept. 11, 2023. We’ll continue to update this story as we learn more information about the new movie.
Deadpool 3 release date
Deadpool 3 is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 3, 2024. We’re officially less than a year away from the movie.
The Deadpool 3 premiere date has changed a few times already, though, so be prepared for anything, especially if the WGA strike continues and the SAG strike happens. Deadpool 3 was going to be released in theaters in September 2024, but it was then bumped back to November 2024. Then, Disney-Marvel moved the release date for Deadpool 3 up to May 3, 2024.
Director Shawn Levy recently told Collider Editor-in-Chief Steve Weintraub that Deadpool 3 could be delayed if the WGA and SAG strikes don’t end soon while promoting the new Netflix series All the Light We Cannot See at the Toronto International Film Festival.
At this point, I think it’s safe to assume that if production doesn’t resume this year, there’s no way that Deadpool 3 will be ready for its May release date. And, it sounds like that’s a toss-up right now.
We’ll share more details about the Deadpool 3 release date when we find out.
Wolverine and Hugh Jackman will be in Deadpool 3
If you thought you saw the last of Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine, you thought wrong! Hugh Jackman is back as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, and it’s going to be amazing.
Wolverine’s role in Deadpool was always discussed, but it wasn’t really on the table until the powers that be at Disney and Marvel wanted to make Deadpool 3 and made it official. Reynolds announced Hugh Jackman would star as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 in September 2022.
Deadpool 3 first look
Deadpool’s official Twitter shared the first look at Deadpool and Wolverine in Deadpool 3 with the caption, “Now in Hugh Res.” Wolverine is rocking the yellow suit!
Deadpool 3 cast
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are part of the Deadpool 3 cast. Deadpool fans will recognize more than a few of the cast members in the third movie of the franchise.
We shared the confirmed cast of Deadpool 3:
- Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool
- Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
- Morena Baccarin as Vanessa
- Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead
- Leslie Uggams as Blind Al
- Karan Soni as Dopinder
- Stefan Kapičić as Colossus
- Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio
- Rob Delaney as Peter
- Jennifer Garner as Elektra
- Emma Corrin
- Matthew Macfadyen
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll see Zazie Beetz in Deadpool 3. Beetz confirmed she was not returning as Domino in the movie.
As for who is returning, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapičić, Shioli Kutsuna, and Rob Delaney are all back for Deadpool 3.
Interestingly, Jennifer Garner, who starred opposite Ben Affleck in Daredevil as Elektra, is reprising her role in Deadpool 3. It’s going to be cool to see how the creative team handles that. Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen have also been cast, but it’s unclear what roles they’ll be playing.
There have been so many rumors about the Deadpool 3 cast. It’s hard to keep track of what’s formerly been announced, what’s expected, and what is just absolutely false, but there are some interesting rumors about other MCU stars and characters joining Deadpool 3, along with some of the X-Men cast. If Wolverine can be involved, why can’t we see Professor X and Ian McKellen? We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Stranger Things producer and director Shawn Levy is directing Deadpool 3
Shawn Levy, who worked with Reynolds on Free Guy and Netflix’s The Adam Project, will direct Deadpool 3. Levy is also credited as a writer for the film, along with Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Reynolds, and Zeb Wells.
Reese and Wernick wrote the first Deadpool movie and co-wrote Deadpool 2 with Reynolds.
What is Deadpool 3 rated?
Deadpool 3 is rated R, just like the first two Deadpool movies. This is a bit controversial because of the Disney-Marvel connection. There were rumors that Deadpool 3 would be dialed down a lot to hit that PG-13 rating that’s been so successful for Marvel. It’s great, though, that they’re allowing Deadpool 3 to be rated R and keeping the soul of the character and the story intact.
Is Deadpool 3 part of the MCU?
Yes! After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, Marvel is moving forward with Deadpool 3 as an MCU movie. It’s unclear exactly how it’s going to fit, but Kevin Feige confirmed that Deadpool 3 is an MCU movie. It’s not separate from the larger stories they’re telling.
It’s going to be interesting with what this means moving forward. Will Deadpool’s role in the MCU grow larger? Will we see Reynolds in the Avengers? It’s going to be wild to see what happens. I’d say anything is possible with the X-Men joining the MCU in the next few years.
What’s Deadpool 3 about?
Well, that’s the other big question that everyone wants to know! It’s still unclear, largely, what Deadpool 3 is about, but anything is possible.
In Deadpool 2, Deadpool uses Cable’s time-travel device to go back in time and save Vanessa. That’s the major plot of Deadpool 2. We have to assume that in Deadpool 3, Deadpool will be using that device to go back in time to join up with Wolverine and possibly the other X-Men, but it’s unclear about what’s going to happen after that or even if that’s going to happen. That’s what I’m guessing will happen, though. It makes the most sense.
How will Logan and Wolverine be in Deadpool 3?
It’s unclear, as mentioned, how Logan/Wolverine will be in Deadpool 3, but it’s rumored that there will be a time-travel element to the movie, which will pair up Deadpool’s storyline with Logan’s storyline in the past.
Is Deadpool 3 filming?
Yes and no! Production on Deadpool 3 started in the summer of 2023, but it was shut down in mid-July because of the SAG strike. According to a new report from Collider, Deadpool 3 was halfway through filming and has 35 days remaining. As soon as the strike is over, it’s assumed that the cast and crew will get back to work on Deadpool 3 immediately.
But, as of September 2023, the strike continues, which means that the May 3 release date for Deadpool 3 is in jeopardy. The post-production teams will need time to finish the movie.
Where to watch Deadpool and Deadpool 2
Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are now streaming on Disney+. For a while, it looked like we might never see Deadpool and Deadpool 2 on Disney+ because they’re R-rated movies. It appears that, for now, Disney+ will stream the two Deadpool movies.
We’re also expecting Deadpool 3 to be available to stream on Disney+ a few months after it’s released in theaters. We’ll share more information about the Deadpool 3 release on Disney+ soon.
