Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Story trailer breakdown and new console reveal
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 made a big impression at San Diego Comic-Con by premiering a new trailer and revealing a new Spider-Man-themed PlayStation 5 console.
Insomniac games strike again in big fashion, and this time it was thanks to the release of the story trailer for their next big game: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. On July 6 it was announced that PlayStation and Insomniac were going to be present at San Diego Comic-Con to host a panel called “Symbiotic Relationships”. The panel was supposed to reveal more about Venom’s role in the highly anticipated sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4, but no one was exactly sure of what exactly to expect. Could a new trailer be too much to ask for? Would we finally get our first in-game look at the Lethal Protector?
Fortunately, all doubts have been left behind, as a new story trailer premiered at San Diego Comic-Con for members present at the panel, and it was later posted online for everyone to see. The new look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is nothing short of spectacular, as we finally get a new glimpse of Venom in action and hints that maybe the symbiote wasn’t the result of an experiment made by Oscorp.
You can watch the new story trailer below:
New reveals
There are a lot of interesting things to highlight from the trailer. First and foremost: Harry Osborn is alive and appears to be healthy. In Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4, we learned that Harry was dying and that his trip to Europe never came to be. Instead, the trip was only used as an excuse so that he could disappear and no one would suspect anything. In reality, he was inside a container inside Oscorp facilities using the symbiote as a means to treat his disease.
Now the story trailer lets us know right away that Harry is alive and that now has “a second chance” to do big things. Whether that was thanks to the symbiote or not remains to be seen, but it appears that he’s well even without wearing it. Besides, the gameplay reveal showed that a cure for Harry’s disease wasn’t found yet when Spider-Man had already bonded with the symbiote, indicating that maybe the black suit wasn’t the answer to Harry’s problems.
Peter’s new job
Another thing to note is that Peter has a “new job” as pointed out by Miles Morales. The super-powered teenager used to work with Otto Octavius as a research lab assistant on a project funded by Norman Osborn himself. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to assume he will now be working in Oscorp Industries, as early on in the trailer we hear Harry saying: “I need you with me, Pete. We’re going to heal the world”. Perhaps Harry gives Peter a job at Oscorp and that’s how Spider-Man will get his hands on the symbiote which was under Norman Osborn’s property in the first game.
The symbiote is of alien origin
An interesting shot in the trailer shows Doctor Connors at what appears to be a meteorite’s crash site. In it, we see the symbiote being surrounded by armed men with badges, indicating they could work for Oscorp.
While many people assumed the symbiote was created by scientists (like in the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book run), it appears that will most likely not be the case. Instead, Insomniac will stick to making the symbiote a sentient being of alien origin, and Dr. Connors will just happen to find it and try to use it to cure Harry Osborn.
Harry Osborn will most likely be Venom
We had a complete theory on why Kraven the Hunter could be Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 after it was revealed that Eddie Brock wouldn’t be the man behind the symbiote. However, seems that won’t be the case as the story trailer implies that Harry Osborn will be the one to become Venom.
Just look at what Harry Osborn tells to Peter at the beginning of the trailer: “I need you with me, Pete. We’re going to heal the world”. And what are Venom’s first words in the trailer? That’s right: “We’re going to heal the world”. Those dialogs alone foreshadow that Harry and Venom are one and the same. And let’s face it, he was the obvious candidate to become Spider-Man’s darkest enemy ever since the post-credits scene in Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4.
Do screenshots reveal our first look at Wraith?
As part of the trailer release, Insomniac Games also released new screenshots of various moments of the game. What’s interesting about these is that we might have our first look at Wraith in the first shot. So who is she? Why is our first look at her a big reveal? Well, Yuri Watanabe was a big part of Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4. She started out as Spider-Man’s cop friend before realizing that maybe the law isn’t enough to stop criminals from doing awful things.
Players saw her downfall in The City That Never Sleeps DLC, where she and Peter constantly argued about what’s the right way to stop bad guys until she eventually kills many of Hammerhead’s henchmen. Now it appears we will see her in full villain form for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, as revealed by the following screenshots:

A new Spider-themed PlayStation console
The story trailer wasn’t the only surprise Insomniac and PlayStation had prepared for San Diego Comic-Con. In the panel, it was revealed that a new Spider-Man-themed PS5 bundle will release alongside the game. The bundle contains a jaw-dropping PS5 console with a black and red design that mimics the symbiote taking over Spider-Man’s suit. A new controller will also be included with the same black and red design along with Spider-Man’s logo on the trackpad. Finally, the cherry on top is that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be a part of the bundle as well in the form of a voucher that allows players to can claim a digital copy of the game.
Finally, the cast and crew of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also talked about the game and how it picks up 9 to 10 months after the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales:
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will release on October 20, 2023. Until then make sure to stick around Bam Smack Pow for everything Spider-Man related.
