The New X-Men are coming, but who are they and what does this mean for Krakoa and Marvel Comics?

Marvel Comics loves to drop secretive posts and articles and walk away. They’ll post something saying, “A major character will die in two months” or “Who is this new Punisher?” and leave the character’s face blank. This leaves fans anticipating the announcement. Recently, Marvel did it again. This time, it’s the fate of the X-Men that’s in question.

In a recent tweet, Marvel posed the question “Who Are the New X-Men?”, referring to the potential fall of Krakoa.

The last two years have not been kind to mutants. Judgment Day, The Sins of Sinister story-arc, and Orchis have shown that the Krakoan age could be over. Marvel’s tweet (that you can see below) was both straightforward and cryptic.

What’s next for Marvel Comics’ X-Men?

First, the Fall of X event could mean the end of the mutants’ island nation. Unlike others with powers, mutants can never have a good life for too long. When something positive happens, the return will be even worse. Watching them go from happiness and bliss to infighting and secrets has been challenging. It’s also made for fantastic entertainment. All of this spells the end of  Krakoa. However, this could be misdirection. Something else Marvel Comics is known for.

The most important part of the tweet was the question of “The New X-Men?”. There have been multiple Marvel comics titled New X-Men. This makes guessing what’s next almost impossible. For example, is Marvel Comics introducing brand-new mutants? Will it consist of X-Men who’ve never been part of the team and are now getting a push? Will the roster consist of superpowered beings that have never teamed up before? Will this be a team made up of young mutants? A group from alternate realities like the Exiles? So many questions.

Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant

Let’s also not forget that Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) will be a mutant when she returns. Could she be affiliated with whatever this is? If you’re looking for clues, look no further than the trailer above. It can’t be a coincidence that Kamala Khan’s next title has “New Mutant” in it. This writer believes it’s part of the sneak peek Marvel is referring to.

Kamala is one of the younger heroes in Marvel Comis. When she makes her return, it has to be in a bigger capacity. Leading a group of teenage mutants as she did during Champions is a good way to continue her popularity. It would be cool to see her with mutants like Surge, Bling, Mercury, Anole, and Rockslide (not Wrongslide). It’s a great way to see her continue to be a leader and promote X-Men that people may not know.

Unfortunately, more news won’t be released until November. However, if you keep up with comics, there will certainly be clues on who’s joining the team and what New X-Men really means. Who knows; maybe Tony Stark’s marriage to Emma Frost means Iron Man will be part of or sponsoring the New X-Men.

Whatever’s next, stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow for more on this story as it comes out.
