While it looked like a familiar face returned in Marvel Comics’ Scarlet Witch, it looks like it was just his old clone.

Way back in X-Men Red No. 7, Magneto was killed stopping Uranos (check out A.X.E. Judgment Day for that story). When he died, Storm pleaded with him to let The Five resurrect him. But Magneto refused. He made a promise when he joined the Great Ring of Arakko to not be resurrected and he kept that promise.

A few months later, Scarlet Witch No. 5 concluded with Magneto returning. This led to a lot of questions. Chief among them is how he came back. The answer to that became apparent in Scarlet Witch No. 7. The Master of Magnetism hasn’t returned.

Scarlet Witch’s Magneto comeback isn’t what it seems

The Scarlet Witch was shocked to see her father back. However, her surprise was taken away as it was revealed that the person standing in front of her wasn’t Magneto. He said that he was back from the dead, but that he was not her father. With a heavy sigh, Wanda realized that this was her father’s clone, Joseph.

While Wanda wished that Joseph was Magneto, she made the best out of the situation. After an adventure that involved the Wizard of Oz (seriously), Wanda and Joseph had a talk. It concludes on a positive note. Wanda hugs Joseph and says he’s right where he belongs if he wants to start over. Their plan is to read The Wizard of Oz together.

Joseph’s presence remains unknown to the X-Men. With everything going on with Orchis in Marvel Comics (check out the 2023 Hellfire Gala for more on that), Joseph returning is right on time. Once Emma Frost, Shadowkat, and the other X-Men realize he’s back, he’ll be used against Orchis. The mutant-hating group thinks the master of Magnetism is dead. This surprise will turn the tide of the war in favor of the mutants.
