21. William Dey

If there was one character that Supergirl didn’t quite get to work, it was William Dey. That’s not to say there weren’t flashes of brilliance (because there were), but a series of unfortunate events prevented him from ever truly finding his footing.

Introduced as a potential new love interest for Kara Danvers in season 5, he was initially rather arrogant and unnecessarily hostile towards her. That is, until it was revealed that he was actually trying to protect Kara because he was investigating their potentially dangerous boss Andrea Rojas. But before that story even got off the ground, Crisis On Infinite Earths completely changed so much of season 5, resetting William and his purpose after just a few episodes.

The show continued to flirt with idea of William as a love interest for Kara for the remainder of season 5, but when it was confirmed that the show would end with season 6, the arc was dropped completely and William became the Super Friends’ bestie instead. This was a necessary change, sure, but it once again made a character that never really got off the ground feel rather purposeless.

His death in the final episodes was heartbreaking, but it once again left audiences feeling a little confused as to why the show kept changing his purpose before dealing him such a devastating blow.
