1. Stargate (1994)

This movie holds a special place in my heart for many reasons. As I mentioned before, 5-year-old me stared at the TV without blinking when my dad sat me down for a movie night. I remember how much that movie changed me – I had woken up that day as a normal Brazilian little girl, and I went to bed as a newly nerdy Brazilian little girl, who was also slightly terrified that Ra would come after me at night. It also introduced me to my very first crush, ever – Doctor Daniel Jackson, then played by the spectacularly talented James Spader.

Mister Spader, in the very impossible event that you’re ever reading this – thank you for being my first crush ever, and you’re an amazing actor.

Anyway.

Stargate, the 1994 film directed by Roland Emmerich and featuring the talents of Kurt Russell and the ever so dreamy James Spader, stands as the pioneering cornerstone of the Stargate saga and a testament to just how amazing sci-fi as a whole is. Within its cinematic confines, this movie reveals the enigmatic Stargate – a mystical and circular relic of alien origins that serves as a conduit to traverse the cosmos, basically a fancy teleporter, but so much more. Although its atmosphere and presentation differ greatly from the television series that followed the movie, it etched its mark as a quintessential piece of classic science fiction. Its intense and exciting narrative, filled with thrilling moments, set the stage for the Stargate franchise that would follow.

With an audacious leap into the uncharted realms of extraterrestrial lore, Stargate takes the audience on an unforgettable journey. The movie’s unique vibes and artistic interpretation may differ from the TV adaptations, but its legacy endures as a foundational pillar that propelled the Stargate franchise to new dimensions. To this day, nearly 30 years later (WOW, I feel old now) Stargate continues to illuminate the skies of science fiction, casting a timeless glow that ignites the passions of generations of enthusiasts and inviting them to come aboard on a cosmic odyssey unlike any other.

From the groundbreaking origins of the 1994 film to the fun and quirky sequels that extended the Stargate lore, these movies have left a mark on the science fiction realm as well as on its fans. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the original movie or found yourself immersed in the direct-to-DVD adventures, the Stargate franchise continues to shine as a testament to the boundless possibilities of science fiction.
