Doctor Who: All 6 modern Doctors ranked from worst to best
By Ashley Hurst
3. Peter Capaldi – The Twelfth Doctor
Peter Capaldi was very familiar with the Whoniverse even before taking the mantle of the titular hero. He first appeared in Doctor Who in season 4’s The Fires of Pompeii as Lucius Caecilius Lucundus. And then he played Home Office secretary John Frobisher in Torchwood, before finally taking to the TARDIS as the Doctor in 2013.
His take on the Time Lord was dark and brooding, at least compared to Matt Smith’s whacky style, which was geared more toward a younger audience. But at the same time, he had his silly moments, notably battling Robin Hood with a spoon and swapping out his signature sonic screwdriver for a pair of sonic sunglasses.
His presence as the Doctor came as a shock to the new generation of viewers, who expected someone young and bursting with energy to take on the role; similar to that of David Tennant and Matt Smith. But as time went on, the initial apprehension turned into respect and admiration. Fans loved seeing him make a cameo in the BBC’s Whoniverse spinoff Class.
He owned the role and gave the Doctor a full story brimming with character development. When at first he came off as quite stoic and heartless, he eventually became more understanding and compassionate, as can be seen in his relationship with his companion Clara (Jenna Coleman).
