Doctor Who: All 6 modern Doctors ranked from worst to best

2. Matt Smith – The Eleventh Doctor
Geronimo! Fish fingers and custard! Matt Smith’s eleventh Doctor brought the charm and some of the best one-liners in the show’s history!
With his tweed suit and fez, Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor offered high energy and wit to the role, making it his own. His Doctor had a little of everything, but it was the writing and the companions that surrounded him that really made his stint a home run. The overarching stories in his seasons, most notably his fairytale-like connection to Amy and his history with Vincent van Gogh, were top-notch tales.
Surrounded by some of the best companions ever – Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) – his seasons had a beautiful fairytale feel that was so unique and endearing. Yes, it felt a bit more child friendly than usual, but the stories were so good that everyone could enjoy and appreciate them. Perhaps he could’ve cut down the quirkiness a little bit; in some of the darker episodes, his need for witty comments felt a little out of place.
His era even saw long-time Whovian Neil Gaiman (Caroline, The Sandman) get to write an episode titled The Doctor’s Wife, and it didn’t disappoint.
As the youngest actor ever to play the Doctor, entering the TARDIS after David Tennant was a mammoth, almost impossible task, but he made the role his own. His three seasons continued the golden age of modern Doctor Who. Most fans only look back with fond memories.
Best episode/s: Amy’s Choice, Vincent And The Doctor, The Doctor’s Wife.
