The Last of Us characters we wouldn’t bring back

3. Wouldn’t bring back: David

Now that we’ve talked about all The Last of Us characters that we’d bring back to life, it’s time to discuss those who we wouldn’t save under any circumstance. And what better way to start things off than by highlighting David? After all, he acted as the main antagonist during the final chapters of the first game.

David was the leader of a group of survivors who also happened to eat human flesh due to the shortage of resources in the post-apocalyptic world. Ellie and Joel first encountered his group at the university where Joel took a lot of them down. As retaliation, David was keen on killing Joel the next time they crossed paths and kidnapped Ellie to keep her in a cell. At one point he was even ready to kill her but (fortunately) failed to do so. Instead, it was Ellie who got the better of him and stabbed him repeatedly with a knife to finally end his life.

The Last of Us Part l is not like many other video games that end with a climactic boss. Instead, a conversation between Joel and Ellie took place in the final moments of the game (which resulted in a perfect and unforgettable conclusion). So the closest that players came to having a “boss” aside from the bloaters was the encounter between Ellie and David.

The fight was tense, enclosed in a small place, and it was immensely gratifying to complete. What was even better was the outcome of the fight. Joel caught up to Ellie and reassured her many times by telling her everything was okay. Many players couldn’t help but shed tears as well the moment he called her “baby girl” and hugged her. It was truly a beautiful moment of peace in between lots of tragedies.

David’s character served to prove that even with zombie-like creatures roaming the world, it is us humans who can be the true monsters. However, his death was necessary since it brought Joel and Ellie closer together and we wouldn’t want it any other way. So we’re sorry, David, but we wouldn’t bring you back to life under any circumstance.
