8 things that nobody wants to admit about Star Wars
1. Finn’s Mishandled and Abandoned Story
FN-2187, or simply Finn, was a Stormtrooper who broke free and became an unlikely hero. When we first met him, drenched in his own sweat and fear, we saw potential – a promise of something new and groundbreaking in the Star Wars lore. There was hope.
Here was a character who offered us a glimpse into the life of a Stormtrooper while exploring the complexities of change, loyalty, and identity. Finn’s character screamed conflict and courage, ripe for narrative exploration. It was truly beautiful. And then it happens. He wields a lightsaber in The Force Awakens, and I along with many, many fans were beyond excited to see what else our friend could do.
Well, that was incredibly short-lived.
What started as an amazing character arc devolved into a stupid series of misadventures and missed opportunities. By the end of the trilogy, Finn’s role had been diluted to the point where he was much more of a sidekick than a co-lead. That initial aura of complexity all but fizzled out, and not by any kind of acting John Boyega lacked to perform – he was fantastic in every scene he was in, regardless of the idiotic plot.
Critics and fans alike can’t help but mourn how Finn’s character was thrown in the backseat, his promising story arc completely destroyed by competing plot points and characters. He could’ve gone through trials and training much like Luke, and actually attuned to the Force instead of being an Instant Jedi. The complete misdirection in his character arc just felt like a slap in the face, honestly.
The sequel trilogy will forever be a part of the Star Wars universe – a universe that continues to captivate and inspire like few others out there. While the recent installments are filled with missed opportunities and have entirely too many elements that can’t be ignored, they also serve as a testament to the enduring power of this franchise.
Even decades after its conception, the characters, worlds, and themes of Star Wars continue to spark conversations, debates, and yes, even lightsaber duels among friends (ever heard of Ludosport?). Regardless if you love or hate the new material, Star Wars remains a cultural staple, its impact as enduring as the Force itself.
As we look to future expansions of this iconic galaxy like the new Ahsoka series on Disney+, we keep our breaths held in both suspense for what’s to come and fear for what we love being ruined. Such is the life of a Star Wars fan.
