A solid and suspenseful battle of titans and a twist that cuts deep awaits in the seventh episode of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode 7, “Evening Festival”, offers up a spectacle, raw emotion, and a Halloween-sized bag of thrills.

As we still try to figure out the exact vibes of the second arc of season 2, this one definitely took us on an up-and-down ride as Mechamaru and Mahito clash, and then civilians are sucked into the station just like bath water goes down the drain.

Grab your Gojo plushies (I can’t be the only one who has one, right?), pull up your Jujutsu Kaisen blankets (again, not just me, right?), and BEWARE OF INCOMING SPOILERS.

Let’s talk about the episode, shall we?

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode 7 review

First up, let’s talk about that clash between Mechamaru and Mahito. Oh, my cursed gods! MAPPA Studios went full Michael Bay on us, but, like, in a good way. Mechamaru’s majestic entrance in his full-fledged, gigantic, Pacific Rim-like mech suit promises to level entire landscapes and probably did some irreparable damage to the ozone layer while at it. Mechamaru throws punches that measure in “years of accumulated cursed energy.”

If an Olympics for super-powered showdowns existed, this one would absolutely take the gold.

And yet, Mahito, the slippery, child-like mannered devil that he is, never comes off as any less intimidating. This is where MAPPA’s artistry shines: showing that size isn’t everything, but adaptability and finesse will most likely knock the wind out of anyone, even the toughest adversaries.

This fight sequence was basically a dance of destruction, and I was here for every second of it.

Just when Mechamaru thinks he’s got Mahito for good and is about to drop the mic, Mahito pulls a Houdini. He’s back, and Mechamaru is the one who drops. While Mahito’s magical avoidance of death is there to shock us, it kind of feels like that one friend who tells you a really long and promising joke only to completely mess up the punchline.

The “he’s-not-really-dead” twist feels cheap and I will admit it annoyed me a smidge. It undercuts the raw tension of the intense battle that literally just took place and all the valiant effort Mechamaru poured into his plan. Yeah, it’s a freaking buzzkill.

But, wait, there’s more heartbreak. Enter Kasumi Miwa, who shares a sweet and heartfelt moment with Mechamaru’s now lifeless puppet back at Jujutsu High. Her confession of wanting to get closer to him felt like a stab to the heart – the kind of emotional climax that reminds us that there are real “feels” beneath the skin of these Jujutsu sorcerers who are basically ready to die at any minute.

As we shift to the heart of Shibuya’s Halloween celebration, we see civilians dressed in their costumes having a good time, only to not have such a good time when a veil is dropped and they’re sucked into what looks like a hole to the station. At that point, the episode cranks up the tension without even showing the chaos. It’s a clever tactic, letting our imagination do the heavy lifting as we await

Gojo’s majestic, fantastic, much-needed, and very not-dramatic entrance.

The episode ends with more questions than answers. What’s next for our favorite sorcerers? How are they planning to confront these invisible enemies? How is Gojo always so perfect? It sets the stage for a future face-off that could, well, no, will be cataclysmic.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 7 is now streaming on Crunchyroll. Trust me, you don’t want to miss it. Especially episode 6, it was hilarious.
