Wednesday season 2 expected to feature more of iconic Addams family character
Fashionable makeover incoming: Morticia Addams could very well be featured more in Wednesday season 2.
The Addams Family has always been the epitome of creepy-chic, and when Netflix dropped its series Wednesday, fans (including my little twins who decided to binge the entire series in one day) couldn’t get enough of the gloom and doom, served with a side of impeccable fashion. The person in charge of how well the cobwebs, vintage collars, and black-and-gray palettes work in the show is four-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood.
In a recent interview for Variety‘s “Artisans” series, Atwood spoke about how she brought the iconic family into the modern era while keeping true to their original vibes. “I took Wednesday into today’s world, a world applicable to a large audience,” she said.
Her Emmy-nominated designs for the series caught everyone’s attention, especially the incredible looks she created for Wednesday Addams, played gracefully by my kids’ favorite person in the entire world, Jenna Ortega.
But what has caught our attention in particular is the little nugget she dropped about Morticia Addams, portrayed by the beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones.
While Atwood kept most details to a minimum, she did hint that Morticia will undergo a sort of fashionable transformation in the second season. She also hinted that we could be seeing more of the character when teasing that Morticia will have a lot of looks in the upcoming second season:
"“In season 2 she’ll have a lot of looks, so it will be really fun to see what Morticia does when she’s out of the dress and into around-the-house looks,” she teased."
Let’s talk about the implications of that statement, shall we?
We’ve always seen Morticia in her iconic, body-hugging black dress. What does it mean for her character and her character development if she’s going to be switching things up? Casual goth mom outfits? Maybe a new gothic loungewear line for me to obsess over? The possibilities are endless.
Atwood’s skill in using a limited color palette, mainly black and white, means we’re probably not going to see Morticia sporting pastels. But the notion of Morticia breaking her dress mold to explore more diverse “around-the-house looks” could offer a change and adaptation of her character that we’ve yet to see.
In the world of the Addams Family, fashion is never just fashion – it’s a statement and a signature. Will a wardrobe change correspond with a shift in Morticia’s role within the plot? Could she be more involved in the adventures (or misadventures) that Wednesday finds herself in? Given the tease that the character will have a lot of looks in season 2, it definitely seems we might be getting more of Morticia next season which is definitely a win!
