The Mandalorian season 4 is not coming to Disney Plus in 2023

The Mandalorian season 4 is rumored to be in the works, but don’t expect Mando and Grogu’s adventures to continue this year. 

The Mandalorian might have started its run as a fall series but for the third straight year in a row, we won’t be getting a new season in the fall on Disney Plus… not that we’re surprised.

While the show’s first two seasons bowed in the fall, season 3 debuted in March of 2023 which is why it should be no surprise to fans that a fourth season won’t be coming before the end of the year. We’ve yet to see a year in which Disney Plus has dropped two seasons of a Disney Plus show in one calendar year, and we definitely don’t anticipate them ever pivoting from that strategy.

Even if they did, we know a new season of The Mandalorian would not be coming this year as filming on season 4 has not yet begun meaning the episodes aren’t filmed and therefore aren’t ready to roll out.

Is The Mandalorian season 4 happening?

Although Disney has yet to announce the formal renewal of The Mandalorian, series creator Jon Favreau has confirmed season 4 is in the works. During a 2022 interview, Favreau confirmed that he was already writing The Mandalorian season 4 — this news coming before season 3 has even been released.

“With television, we’re very lucky that we don’t have to rush things through into an hour-and-a-half, two hours. We get to tell stories slowly. So now, as Dave [Filoni]’s doing Ahsoka, it’s very much informing the writing that I’m doing for [The Mandalorian] Season 4. It becomes – how should I put it – more precise,” Favreau told Cinemablend. 

At this point, it seems like all that is left for Disney to do is officially confirm the show’s renewal. This is news it could look to hold for Disney Plus Day 2023 as it could give Disney a major Star Wars announcement to share on its annual celebration.

The Mandalorian season 4 possible release date

Considering The Mandalorian season 4 seems to have already been written (at least in some part), we can’t rule out a possible 2024 premiere date for the Star Wars series. There was only a year gap between the first two seasons of the show, so there is a strong possibility Disney could look to roll out the fourth season within a year of when season 3 debuted.

Given filming hasn’t begun due to the ongoing strikes, a Spring 2024 premiere seems unlikely, but we could see the show completed in time for a Fall 2024 premiere if Disney wants to prevent another extended hiatus.

It’s also possible that we could have to wait until 2025 for season 4 as Disney has been spacing out its bigger originals more in recent years. So if it wants, we could see The Mandalorian season 4 held until Spring 2025.
