2. Season 1, Episode 9, “Baelor”

The next episode in our series of the specific moments that prove Joffrey Baratheon is the worst character in Game of Thrones (and maybe even ever?), in season 1, episode 9, “Baelor,” which aired on June 12, 2011. The official synopsis for the episode reads:

"“Robb goes to war against the Lannisters. Jon finds himself struggling on deciding if his place is with Robb or the Night’s Watch. Drogo has fallen ill from a fresh battle wound. Daenerys is desperate to save him.”"

In episode 9, Baelor, Ned Stark, a beloved character in the show, issues a false confession, admitting to treason and crimes he never committed, in the hopes of keeping his daughters safe. He declares Joffrey of House Baratheon as the legitimate ruler of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and is then expected to be taken to the Night’s Watch to guard the Wall after being stripped of all his titles and lands, however, going back on his word to spare the life of Ned Stark, Joffrey ordered his shocking and heartbreaking execution.

This particular moment was hugely significant because it was the turning point in the series and one of the catalysts for future harrowing events. This moment demonstrates the true extent of Joffrey’s sadistic and cruel nature and reveals that he truly has no sense of honor or decency and that he clearly is willing to do whatever it takes to maintain his power.
