3. Season 1, Episode 10, “Fire and Blood”

The third instance that highlights the worst of the worst traits of Joffrey Baratheon’s character occurs in Game of Thrones season 1, episode 10, “Fire and Blood” which aired on June 19, 2011 on HBO. The official synopsis for the episode reads:

"“Robb vows to get revenge on the Lannisters. Jon must officially decide if his place is with Robb or the Night’s Watch. Daenerys says her final goodbye to Drogo.”"

In “Fire and Blood,” Sansa has already been traumatized by witnessing the beheading of her father Ned Stark in the previous episode, and then Joffrey forces her to look at her father’s head, and handmaiden, on a spike for “as long as it pleases” the child King. Then cruelly, he has his footmen, Ser Meryn Trant, strike Sansa Stark for her words that maybe one day her brother Robb might give her Joffrey’s head.

The reason we think this moment is significant is because it not only shows Joffrey’s sadistic nature and his willingness to cause pain and suffering to others, but also the turning point for Sansa, as up until this point, Sansa has been naive and idealistic, but after witnessing Joffrey’s cruelty firsthand, she begins to understand the true nature of the world she lives in.
