Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader

Let me start by saying I absolutely love Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader’s storyline. Yes, he becomes one of the worst villains in the Star Wars universe, but tragic hero his arc is so interesting. His struggle between the Light and Dark Side is very compelling. And the fact that Padmé dies after giving birth to their two children, Luke and Leia, after Anakin joined the bad guys in an attempt to save her, is so heartbreaking.

Ultimately, of course, Anakin succumbs to the Dark Side and takes on a new identity as Darth Vader by the end of Revenge of the Sith. Vader’s intentions are incredibly complex, and he has some of the best scenes in the original trilogy.

Similar to Kylo Ren, Anakin Skywalker joins the Dark Side out of fear and even love. He has visions that Padmé will die in childbirth, and he’s manipulated by Palpatine to turn to the dark in order to keep her safe. I don’t entirely blame him given his intentions and the complicated situation.

All of that said, however, I still wouldn’t change fate. Yes, Vader is a great character, but the fact that he makes a sacrifice to save Luke, ultimately getting himself killed, is a fantastic part of the franchise. His act of redemption and death are emotional moments that have a lasting impact on the viewer, so for that reason, I would leave Vader dead.

VERDICT: Leave dead
