Marvel fans have wondered if Moon Knight season 2 will happen in the future. Now we have something of an update.

Moon Knight was one of Marvel Studios’ most unique shows yet. Debuting on Disney Plus in March 2022, it introduced Marvel Cinematic Universe fans to the one character who had eluded the live-action shared universe of superheroes for a very long time. And with Oscar Isaac playing the title role, that introduction was worth the wait.

One of the main things that set it apart from its predecessors was the fact that it wasn’t explicitly tied to the previous MCU properties. Yes, it existed within that universe, but there weren’t any references to the other shows or movies, and that has left fans wondering if the character will ever cross over with other MCU heroes.

Another question the audiences have been asking has to do with whether or not the show will return for a second season. Now, Moon Knight‘s director has spoken about the its future and the possibility of that second season.

Moon Knight director discusses the possibility of season 2

Moon Knight‘s director and executive producer Mohamed Diab recently spoke to Arabic Marvel (in an interview which was translated to English by The Cosmic Circus) and revealed that the show was always planned to be a six episode series as that decision came directly from Marvel right from the beginning.

He added that, while exceptions were made for shows such as WandaVision (which had a nine-episode season) and Loki (which was renewed for a second season), all of the studios’ series projects are “all six episodes”. He commented:

"“Marvel had determined it from the first day. Marvel’s series projects are all six episodes except for special projects like ‘WandaVision.’ The usual format is six episodes. ‘Loki’ is the only series they said will be in two parts from the first day.”"

So it sounds like the studio knows which shows will be back and which shows won’t be before they even begin streaming on Disney Plus.

As for whether or not Moon Knight‘s success could have attributed to a potential second season, it sounds like that was never on the cards for Marvel, as Diab adds that they don’t operate like other networks by renewing based on success but that it’s always about about the plan they have in place.

"“Marvel’s way is not the usual way where if the project succeeds, I say let’s renew it for a second season. It’s their plan, successful or not, they have a plan.”"

It’s not completely unexpected to learn that Marvel often sticks by the plans they have in place. The studio built the MCU from the ground up by following a specific plan. 15 years and four phases later, it’s an intricately, well-built machine that continues to dominate the box office and streaming charts with its original content. That said, Moon Knight is the perfect example of a show that could have followed in the TV series format, branching out from Marvel’s miniseries formula.

Moon Knight would work as a straightforward TV show

It’s been said before, but the thing that sets Moon Knight apart from its MCU Disney Plus counterparts is that it is completely disconnected from anything else going on in that world. A large part of that is likely its setting in both the UK and Egypt, but that also lends itself nicely to the possibility of the miniseries becoming a fully-fledged TV show.

Khonshu’s Fist of Justice is a character unlike anything else we’ve seen from the MCU thus far. He’s affectionately referred to by fans as Marvel’s answer to Batman, so like with The Dark Knight, he’s a bit of a lone warrior. Taking that into account, Moon Knight works as an isolated series that just focuses on its own characters, its own storylines, and its own lore. It doesn’t need to get involved in whatever else is going on with the MCU, and that’s okay.

There is scope for a potential Moon Knight season 2 as well, as the first season’s post credits scene featured the first appearance of Marc Spector and Steven Grant’s third personality, Jake Lockley. It definitely suggested that the show could get the Loki treatment and return for a second season.

Unfortunately, this update from the show’s director suggests that a second season may not happen. It’s possible that Marvel could change their plan and renew the show, but it seems like the next time we see Moon Knight it could be in a different MCU project, and that would of course present the character with a host of new storyline possibilities. That’s not to say that he couldn’t return in a new spinoff miniseries, though.

It is likely that we will see the hooded warrior again in the future, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige commenting earlier this year about how he thinks “there’s a future for the character”. Oscar Isaac himself also confirmed that “there have been some specific conversations” about his eventual return. We’ll just have to wait and see if that’s on Disney Plus or in another project entirely.

Would you like to see Moon Knight season 2 happen at Disney Plus? Do you think the character should cross over into an MCU movie instead?
