Can you imagine if Jake Gyllenhaal had donned the cape and cowl of the Dark Knight instead of Christian Bale? Well, it almost happened, and now you can.

The year is 2005. Fresh from making us all question our dreams and memories with Memento and Insomnia, Christopher Nolan is prepping for his Batman reboot, Batman Begins. We all know Christian Bale not only snagged but absolutely nailed the role, driving the Batmobile into our hearts for a stellar trilogy. But on a recent Happy Sad Confused podcast episode, screenwriter David S. Goyer spilled the Gotham tea.

Turns out that Jake Gyllenhaal was in the running for Batman before the role was ultimately offered to Bale. Goyer was actually all aboard the Gyllenhaal Express for Batman.

“There were many who tested for the role,” Goyer recalled in the podcast episode, “and I had pushed for Jake,” Goyer revealed.

Sadly, no film roll has yet surfaced showing Gyllenhaal dressed in black, testing out his best “I’m Batman” voice but thanks to an incredible piece of fan art we now have the chance to see what the Oscar nominee could look like as the Dark Knight!

What Jake Gyllenhaal as Batman could look like

Thanks to talented artist Hasan Kazi, we can see how Gyllenhaal could’ve rocked Gotham City. Wearing a modernized version of the iconic grey and blue suit, Gyllenhaal definitely looks the part of Bruce Wayne.

The inspiration behind the art came from Gyllenhaal emerging as a fan-favorite in the new fan casting that is underway regarding who should play the new Batman in the DC Universe. Rather than going with the standard look we’ve seen in recent films, Kazi drew inspiration from the classic blue and grey suit with a modern touch for live action.

The art definitely makes a strong argument for why Gyllenhaal’s name was once considered for the role of Batman and why his name is coming up in conversation as DC looks to cast the character again. He absolutely can pull off the look and we would be game for a Gyllenhaal-led Batman movie!
